You Were Never There
Diego García Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stop where you are looking up at the sun
See all the cars standing still as they run
The day starts to fade slip away out of side
A flash in the sky lighting up my dark night

And you were never there
You were never there
You had it all
More than most that I know
You hide yourself behind the wall
And it shows

Girl you never care
You were never there
Because you never care
You were never there

It was a rainiy night
In the quiet town in Florida
I stayed awake all night
Couldn't sleep at all
So I sang to her

Girl you never care
You were never there
Because you never care
You were never there

It was a rainy night
In the quiet town in Florida

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Diego Garcia’s “You Were Never There” is a plaintive, heartfelt song about the pain of being left behind by someone you love. The first verse sets the tone of the song as the singer paints a picture of the world going about its business while he is struck by the absence of his loved one. The lyrics conveys the image of an individual that has been left behind and is sadly observing life go on without them. The verse about the flash of light in the sky only serves to emphasize the singer’s isolation in this moment. The chorus provides a simple, repeating reminder of the absence of the loved one: “You were never there.”

The second verse of the song offers a glimpse into the more intimate moments of the relationship. The lyrics about hiding behind walls could refer to the loved one being emotionally unavailable or concealing her true self. The bridge of the song is a reflection on a particular instance where the singer was singing to their loved one in the middle of the night in a Florida town, where it was raining. In these moments, the singer’s vulnerability is exposed, and he reaches out to the girlfriend (or ex-girlfriend) who has left him behind.

Overall, Garcia’s “You Were Never There” is a moving and sincere expression of heartbreak and the lingering pain of an ended relationship. The lyrics capture the sense of being left behind by someone you care about, even as the world moves on around you. The song is a reflection of the universal experience of being hurt by someone you love, and the struggle to come to terms with the loss.

I can’t believe this song only has 208k views. Everyone I’ve ever sent it to or played it for absolutely loves it and all their other songs. Something isn’t right there’s a segment of the population that would buy a million copies of this in no time if they only knew about it. Share this with someone.

This is a perfect spring and summer song. Breezy with a touch of spanish guitar, and smooth singing. I agree, it has a 60ish feel too. A song to blast while you drive with the windows down. Beautiful.

This artist is one of the best newcomers out today. I love his delivery, lyrics and music. This whole album "Laura" is a must have in anyone's collection. Great work for this talented artist who I hope will produce more memorable works to come as good as or better.

Heard this yesterday on my car radio and it instantly grabbed me. It felt like a lost song from the late 60s. So glad, once again, to find these fleeting songs here on YouTube.
