Breathless
Diet Cig Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I can walk around in my underwear
In my first apartment
Where I pay so much for rent
I check the mail
In my underwear
I don't where to put the pillows on my bed
Cars zoom by at early hours
And not even a shower curtain in my shower
But will you still come visit me on north front street
And will you still watch the simpsons on my floor
Pretend it's 1994
Dvd's weren't out yet
So please ignore my box set
The lyrics of Diet Cig's song "Breathless" are full of imagery and emotion. The opening lines, "I don't have any kitchenware, but I can walk around in my underwear" suggest the singer is living life one day at a time, without all the trappings of a well-settled life. They live in their first apartment and pay exorbitant rent. The line "Not sure what side is best to lay my head" is particularly poignant, implying a feeling of being lost and not quite sure of where one stands. The absence of basic household items like shower curtains hints at the financial distress of the singer.
The chorus of "Breathless" provides a contrast to the verses, as the singer shifts their focus from themselves to a potential lover, asking them if they will still come visit on North Front Street, and watch the Simpsons on the floor. The reference to the Simpsons dates the song and amplifies the sense of nostalgia in the song. The line "Pretend it's 1994, DVDs weren't out yet" creates an air of playfulness, as though the singer is trying to imagine simpler times.
The song "Breathless" is a relatable and touching tale of a young adult trying to navigate life and love. It speaks to the challenges of figuring things out for oneself, while leaning on others for comfort and support. With its catchy melody and emotional lyrics, "Breathless" has become a fan favorite.

I just moved into my new place. It's the first time I've had my own home and I barely have anything to furnish it with... this song was the only one that came to mind while falling asleep on my inflatable mattress during the first night. Sadly, I can't have anyone over due to current world circumstances, but hopefully soon I'll be able to invite a friend to watch The Simpsons on my floor.
