But After the Gig
Discharge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Leather and sweat fills the atmosphere
Stretchin and drippin just to pogo too
The anarchy show they shout it out
There ís no real music And I'm just shoutin and screamin'
But that ís a response to an anarchist meeting
But after the gig is my true bender
Every shake back to me goes
Poor lambs this is a fuckin slaughter
You think that this is a turn of phrase

Realism is what we're preachin
Are you really so afraid?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Discharge's "But After the Gig" describe the atmosphere of a crowded and sweaty punk rock show, with fans eagerly bouncing around in the pit to the beat of the music. The band takes a mocking stance towards their own performance, suggesting that their music is not "real" and that they are just "shouting and screaming" in response to the anarchy of the crowd.

However, as the song progresses, it becomes clear that this is actually a passionate call to arms for a real revolution against the establishment. The band implores their listeners to embrace realism and reject the mainstream media's portrayal of punk rock as a shallow, silly fad. They contrast their own intensity and commitment to the cause, arguing that their music is actually a powerful tool for change and resistance.

Here man, we wrote to Cal in 1980, he sent us the lyrics. I know you don't wanna change it, put you could stick em in your description.

Leather and sweat fill the atmosphere,
I sense an enjoyment as you pogo to,
the anarchist songs being shouted out

There's no real music,
and I'm just shouting and screaming
but theres a response to our anarchist preaching

But after the gig,
it's back to obeying their every say,
back to being those poor lambs,
led to the fucking slaughter

Are you the defeatist that dare not face,
the realism of what we are preaching?
Are you really so afraid?

I was an early Punk in London, Discharge were in the second wave, and as hard core Punks among the the second wave, I loved them. Anti nowhere league led by a former soldier, Chron Gen and all the others including Becki Bondage. My memories may be fading now from the 76-82 period but great to hear this again. I have the EP but just listen to Radio 6 these days.

Listening to an episode of the podcast 'Essential Termors' with Guy Picciotto (Rites of Spring, Fugazi) and this was one of his three songs he picked that had a profound impact on him.
