Disclosure (feat Sam Smith) Lyrics

You used to call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
Call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing
I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing
Ever since I left the city you got a reputation for yourself now
Everybody knows and I feel left out
Boy you got me down, you got me stressed out
You used to call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
Call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing
I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing
Ever since I left the city you, you and me we just don't get along
You make me feel like I did you wrong
Going places where we do not belong
You used to call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
Call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
And I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing
I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing
This days all I do is wonder if you're bending over backwards for someone else
Wonder if you're rolling over backwards for someone else
Doing things I thought you, getting nasty for someone else
You don't need no one else
This days all I do is wonder if you're bending over backwards for someone else wonder if you're rolling up for backwards for someone else
You should just be yourself, right now you're someone else, you don't need no one else
You used to call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
Call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing
And I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing

You used to call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love
Call me on my cellphone, late night when you need my love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Hotline Bling" by Disclosure (feat Sam Smith) speak of a person who is receiving calls from a former lover late at night, only when they need love. The singer reminisces about the times they used to be called upon and how they always knew it meant they were needed for love. However, it's evident that the relationship has run its course since the singer has left the city they both lived in, and the former lover no longer wants them. The singer feels like they are being excluded as the ex-partner has now 'got a reputation for themselves.' They wonder if their former partner is rolling over backwards for someone else, doing things they thought were only meant for the singer. The chorus explains how the singer knows that when the hotline blings, it can only mean one thing - that the former lover needs their love.

The song seemingly alludes to Drake's original hit "Hotline Bling," which also talks about a previous love interest who used to reach out to him frequently, but now wants nothing to do with him. Smith's version is a cover of Drake's song, with Disclosure giving it their unique electronic take on it, and Smith changing some of the lyrics to fit his perspective. The song knows how to celebrate Smith's strengths as a vocalist, and he adds that soulful tinge that he is known for.
