Tears
Division S Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When routine bites hard
And ambitions are low
And resentment rides high
But emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads

Then love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold?
You've turned away on your side
Is my timing that flawed?
Our respect runs so dry
Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through our lives

But love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again

You cry out in your sleep
All my failings exposed
And there's a taste in my mouth
As desperation takes hold
Just that something so good just can't function no more

But love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again

Love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Division S's song Tears express the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of routine and low ambition, while also feeling a sense of resentment towards someone or something. Despite these negative emotions, there is still a strong connection that persists, exemplified by the appeal that has remained throughout their lives. However, despite this connection, they are still torn apart by love, which seems to be the only constant throughout their struggles.

The first verse sets up the idea of feeling trapped and stuck in a routine, barely able to move forward or make progress. The mention of changing ways and taking different roads suggests a desire to break out of this cycle, but it is not clear if they are successful in doing so. The subsequent lines of the chorus, "love will tear us apart again," suggest that despite any attempt at change, they will still be haunted and held back by love.

The second verse delves deeper into the specific relationship, where there seems to be a lack of respect and a feeling of being ignored or pushed away. Despite this, there is still an undeniable romantic appeal, but it seems to be fading away with time. The line "Is my timing that flawed?" suggests a feeling of inadequacy and uncertainty, wondering if the timing of their advances is incorrect or too late.

The final verse introduces a sense of desperation and potential betrayal, with the line "All my failings exposed" implying that something has gone wrong or been revealed. The taste in the singer's mouth and the idea of "desperation taking hold" suggests a sense of panic and realization that things cannot continue as they are. Despite this, there is still a sense that something so good cannot just stop - perhaps the connection between them is too strong to ever truly break.

Overall, the lyrics of Tears are a melancholic exploration of feeling trapped, unfulfilled, and held back by an uncontrollable force, namely love. Despite their attempts to break free and find their way, the pull of this force is too strong to resist, leading to a cycle of pain and heartbreak.

I have learned so much from your Celtic series. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us. I look forward to the Geometry series. I avoided it in high school, now it's time to learn your way. Thanks again....Sharon H.

One of my favourite series! Informative, practical and oddly soothing in a certain way ;) Very aptly titled also. If only my math teacher back in the day had taken some time to teach geometry by illustrating its functionality in art, I would have found it less hard to digest... Many thanks David!

David Nicholls

Thanks for your very kind comments, Jarno, I appreciate it!

Will be launchind a 30 video calligraphy series during the summer, so stay subscribed!

G.A. Wells

Thank you for this wonderful series of videos. Back in the 70's two of my math teachers committed suicide in a 5 year period. I'm so thankful that these videos allow me to learn from you without you having to watch me struggle through.

David Nicholls

I'm glad you found them useful, G!

Thanks David! First found this series of videos last night on my way to bed, but didn't make it there until I'd watched every one! Very beautiful, useful, interesting and entertaining...at least for me. A lucky find seeing as I'm undertaking a study in geometry for design. But otherwise I think I'd be fascinated by these tutorials in any case. Firstly because it boggles the mind why geometry isn't taught like this in schools and secondly because this material is of great human interest. The straightedge and compass; prehistoric tools that we still use today to practise the equally ancient art of drawing. And the fact that people have known about and explored these geometric mysteries for countless millennia! The archaeology of geometry! You hit on it with the video about the Ying/Yang especially. I would love to know what you'd make of a very interesting book on that subject specifically, in which the author makes some very convincing speculations about the dawn of geometry, pointing out in incredibly illuminating detail how important geometry has been in shaping societies, religions and pretty much everything. The book is in two volumes. It's called "The Secrets of Ancient Geometry - And Its Use". The author is TONS BRUNES. I have digital copies I can pass on to you.

I would love if you did a video or two on the Pentagram, David. Especially one involving its special relationship with the golden section. Do you think you will?

David Nicholls

jerome! !!
You must have read my mind! I'm just planning a series on The Golden Mean, including the pentagram, Fibernacci etc. It has fasciated me since I learned about it at art school back in the 1970's.
stay subscribed! (if you haven't already watched the 'rusty compasses' method of constructing a pentagon, please watch it. It's apparently slightly inaccurate, but the method is so beautiful and perfectly adequate for artistic, rather than scientific work.

I was taught basic geometry at school when I was seven. It seems most people don't learn it at all.!

Yes the archaeology of geometry would be a great subject for a doctoral thesis!!!! What a pity the drawings for the pyramids and the Parthenon haven't survived!

David Nicholls

I'll look at the Tons Brunes book, thanks

Lini Branco

Geometry is a skill that will help when designing quilt patterns.  Matching up Fabric can be tricky, because it stretches, so a preliminary pattern drawn up accurately and marked ahead of time saves you from do-overs.  So I have been making the celtic patterns and planning.  If you draw the patterns out on Freezer Paper, use the paper as your pattern.  I'm so excited.  When I complete something, I intend to send you the finished product.

David Nicholls

Lini Branco That would be very nice of you.
