Memento Mori
Divitius Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have I bent? Have I broken?
Missed my chance to leave the words unspoken?
The light fades I hear the waves
A promise that no one could have kept safe

You wouldn′t believe the things I've seen
Scratched out my eyes just to know what it means
I′m coming apart at the seams
Spilling my guts
Show me what it means

Have I loved or have I lost?
Have I paid the price, calculated the cost?
Winter bleeds into night
Will I turn back, will I see what was right?

I won't be a slave to the things I've seen
Open my eyes
Now I know what it means
Pull me together stitch up the seams
Hand in hand
We will learn what it means

I will not fade I will not rest
There′s the strength of a world beating in my chest

Pull me back from the edge
There′s the strength of a world beating in my chest

I believe in the end we'll survive
I believe everything′s alright

The strength of the waves

The strength of the flames
The world we leave will remember my name

Overall Meaning

The song "Memento Mori" is a reflection on life, death, and the choices we make in between. The first stanza sees the singer questioning whether they have made the right decisions and whether they have wasted opportunities to express themselves. The imagery of the fading light and waves suggests the passing of time and the inevitability of change. The singer acknowledges the impossibility of keeping promises and wonders whether they have seen too much in life.

The second stanza continues to explore the theme of loss and the price we pay for our choices. The coming winter and the bleeding into night suggest the approach of darkness and the end of life. However, the singer remains determined not to be a slave to the past and to open their eyes to the present. The line "Pull me together stitch up the seams" suggests a desire to repair the damage done and start afresh with someone else. The final lines express a belief in survival and the hope that the world will remember the singer, despite their struggles.
