Caravan
Dizzy Gillespie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night and stars above that shine so bright
The myst'ry of their fading light
That shines upon our caravan

Sleep upon my shoulder as we creep
Across the sand so I may keep
The mem'ry of our caravan
This is so exciting
You are so inviting
Resting in my arms
As I thrill to the magic charms
Of you beside me here beneath the blue

My dream of love is coming true
Within our desert caravan

Overall Meaning

In Gillespie's song Caravan, he describes the mystifying beauty of a caravan's journey under a night sky full of stars. The first two lines of the song have a dual meaning. It depicts the starry sky that illuminates the journey of the caravan, as well as the metaphorical fading light represented by the end of the journey. The song has a romantic tone that is enhanced by the line "sleep upon my shoulder as we creep," which describes the intimacy of the moment. Gillespie's use of the word "caravan" symbolizes a long journey and the growth of a relationship.

The song's lyrics denote the underlying passion of the lead singer and the magic of the moment, which is reinforced in the line, "You are so inviting, resting in my arms, as I thrill to the magic charms of you beside me here beneath the blue." The color blue is symbolic of the vast sky, adding a sense of tranquility to the overall feel of the song. The lyrics convey the profound and soothing memories people on a caravan journey experience.

This is by far my favorite version of caravan. I know that Duke/Tizol's original is a masterpiece, and Monk's one is really funky. But this version just hits me man, it shows the musical talent of all band members, especially hearing the one where Dizzy plays with Arturo Sandoval. Man that shit bops.

Wow!  Diz was one of the cornerstones of American Jazz and is still the mountain you must climb to be acclaimed as a writer/performer in eclectic Jazz.
