"I'm the Sheik of Araby,
Your love belongs to me.
At night when you're asleep
Into your tent I'll creep.
The stars that shine above,
Will light our way to love.
You'll rule this land with me;

Overall Meaning

We'll live in perfect harmony."

The song "The Sheik of Araby" was originally written in 1921 by Harry B. Smith, Francis Wheeler, and Ted Snyder. It has been recorded by countless artists over the years, but Django Reinhardt's version is a particular standout. The lyrics are from the perspective of the "Sheik of Araby," who is confident in his ability to win over the love of his desired partner. He promises to sneak into her tent at night and they will live in perfect harmony ruling the land together. The lyrics can be interpreted as both romantic and possessive, as the singer claims ownership over the love of the other person.

The song has a fun and upbeat melody, which contrasts with its somewhat predatory undertones. Indeed, the character of the Sheik in the lyrics has been criticized for perpetuating harmful stereotypes of the Middle Eastern male as exotic and threatening. However, the song has remained popular and has been covered by various musicians over the years. Reinhardt's version is notable for his virtuosic guitar playing, which adds a frenetic energy to the tune.

@Dionysos37

I was on honeymoon with my wife in Athens, Greece---we sat at an outdoor plaza cafe and up came a small "Gypsy" quartet playing guitars, accordion etc. When we asked for something Django, they went into shock, and then played all Django music for half an hour---they were in ecstacy and so were we!

@fridgemagnet

a musical genius and hats off to the sound engineer who produced such a lovely recording 72 years ago!!!!

@ztahs

Doesn't matter how many times you listen to Django and Steffan you just shake your head in amazement at how spectacular they were.

@rylieriley

Django is beautiful, but that violin is absolute heaven.

@erichnussbaum

The violinist is good, but Django is genius.

Almost always Steffan Grappelli if I've spelt his name correctly !

@obscurebandfan

No distortion, compression, delay, reverb or any other special effects to cover up his technique. Just one man, three fingers, and an acoustic guitar; so pure.

@r3d3y3si

Jonah Fuerstenberg and a fiddle

@claudearthur4532

And a killer band, don’t forget.
