Half Life
Djo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I fight the urge to search my name
There's a better me, I swear
But curiosity

I see
I let my ego get the best of me
In the age of excess
Less may be best for me

God, it makes me sad
We're the last to know
The world is changing
And upgrading
Faster than we can control

Sick of living in the old days?
Mind burdened by the old ways?
Keep trying to forget about it?
Watch a video, don't fret about it (no)
You don't need it, why you want it? (Want it)
I don't see you moving on, kid (on kid)
I don't see you moving on, kid
No, I don't see you moving on

Now I see
I let these people dig their hooks in me
And I consider myself a fool
Plugged in
Half life

God, you're a fool
You think these people really care for you?
You really think they will be there for you?
Plugged in
That's a half life

I know you
I love you
I want you
I need you
You complete me (you complete me)
I adore you (I adore you)
I adore you (I adore you)
I adore you (I adore you)

I adore you
I adore you

Overall Meaning

Djo’s song “Half Life” addresses the modern-day phenomenon of addiction to technology and social media. The song talks about the feeling of being “plugged in” to a virtual world, and how it can make someone feel incomplete and unfulfilled in real life. The lyrics, “I fight the urge to search my name, there’s a better me I swear, but curiosity,” talk about the obsession with online validation and the need for recognition. The next line “I let my ego get the best of me” acknowledges the role of personal ego in feeding this addiction.

The chorus of the song highlights the frustration of living in the past and being unable to move on from trivial things. The lines “Sick of living in the old days? Mind burdened by the old ways? Keep trying to forget about it? Watch a video, don't fret about it” criticize the tendency to avoid reality and fill the void with online distractions, rather than making any real changes.

In the second verse, the lyrics “Now I see, I let these people dig their hooks in me, and I consider myself a fool” illustrate how people have been blindly caught up in this system of technological advancement, without realizing the negative consequences. The song title “Half Life” represents the feeling of being only partially alive, as opposed to living fully in the moment.

Overall, “Half Life” acts as a wake-up call to the danger of over-consumption of technology and social media, as it can lead to a shallow and unfulfilling life.

Djo is like literally exactly what music needs right now. The perfect blend of contemporary creativity with 80’s influence! Every song is different and so unique yet recognizable as djo, like how does he do it?!?!!

@FreeCatCheese

He does it because he listens to music that isn't driven by social media, duh... The man talks to people in the world and on the internet that have opinions that differ from his own, and he's open minded and listens. People have forgotten how to do that, even before the internet. Listen/Look/Watch and vibe on what the people you meet love, and you too can be interesting to someone other than your closest robot clones.
