From the first note he has allowed God to elevate him higher and higher. And it is evident by not only through the songs that he sings, but the words that he conveys to the people of God on every stage. It is truly What a Wonder the Lord has Done to him, through him and for him. An intricate part of Doc McKenzie’s music ministry down through the years on his musical journey has been the forming of the Hi-Lites.
The Hi-Lites have been through many transitions of background vocalists as well as musicians. But now God has put in place whom he wanted to be in place. Today we have as the Hi-Lites: Darryl Henley, Rodney “Roc” Dickerson, Darryl started at age 11.
Darryl stayed Robert Holland and Dennis Millerfor 18 years before going into the ministry. Darryl later returned in 1999/2000 and has not looked back. Rodney’s presence as point man for background vocals and choreography is one that is in a class by itself. Rodney has the unique distinction of being an all around gifted vocalist. He projects energy that invigorates the crowd. His captivating, and almost always, spontaneous smile will melt the coldest hearts.
The Roc left for a short time and has now returned as a vocalist. Robert started with The Hi-Lites in 2001. He left for a short time to pursue other endeavors. We are happy to have him back in the Hi-Lites family. Dennis is no stranger to the Hi-Lites. He has sung with The Hi-Lites on numerous occasions filling in when needed down through the years. And now after pursuing other musical endeavors, he takes his place as one of The Hi-Lites.
Since their conception, Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites have been in the center of the hearts of many that love Gospel Quartet Music. They have proven that they are determined to do Gods’ will where ever he wants them to go. And now, they are proclaiming that it is their time and their turn to get everything that they have earned.
They have stood the test of time, through good days and bad days, they still lift their voices, hearts and souls and profess that we really do serve a Good God. And because he’s been so good to them, they Won’t Complain. Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites have obtained many professional accomplishments including several releases, numerous nominations for awards and the opportunity to participate in many special events all across the country, but their greatest reward is knowing that God is and continues to be blessed by what they do.
They still travel extensively offering their best Praise unto God. They are not a group that just sing, but they worship!! And because of their desire to worship, it commands those in their presence to do the same. It is true that if you wait, trust and have faith God will not just give you what you want, but he will give you what you need, when you need it. We bless God for an awesome musical staff: Ray Spann, Mick Alston and Ceddrick Cooper. One of the most talented sound technicians: Bryan McKenzie as well as a faithful ministry assistant: Stephanie F. Smith.
No one ever said that the journey would be easy, but Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites wouldn’t trade it all for nothing in the world! For through it all, they can still say, they still have joy. For what didn’t kill them has surely made them stronger. If they are ever in your area make sure that you are there for a worship experience of a lifetime. One thing is for sure that once you hear them, you won't leave there the same. Your spirit will be edified, God will be glorified and the devil will surely be terrified!
Save Me Now

Yeah I've been so strung out
Can you picture this
I'll take something
It's better than nothing, anything
That you've go to give
I can't let go
I've been down so long
Could you save me
I'll fight my way
Just to hear you say
If I go up in flames
Could you save me
The more you whisper
The words keep stinging in my ear
We're never gonna be the same
Sunshine fading and black sheets
Raining down on me
They cover up everything
I can't let go
I don't want you to know
I've been down so long
Could you save me
I'll fight my way
Just to hear you say
If I go up in flames
Could you save me
I've been so selfish
I get so high
Don't want to come down
I've been so low
Yeah I've been so strung out
Can you picture this
I can't let go
I don't want you to know
I've been down so long
Could you save me
I'll fight my way
Just to hear you say
If I go up in flames
Could you save me
Yeah could you save me
Oh could you save me
The song Save Me Now by Doc Mckenzie & The Hi-Lites portrays the mental and emotional struggles of an individual who has hit rock bottom. The singer confesses that they have been low and strung out, seeking anything to fill the emptiness they feel. It is reminiscent of the state of addiction where one seeks temporary relief without realizing the harm they are causing to themselves and those around them. The line, "I don't want you to know," suggests that the person is ashamed of the situation they find themselves in and is trying to hide their struggles from others.
Despite the darkness surrounding them, the person is desperately seeking help and support from someone they trust. They plead for the other person to save them and fight to keep from going up in flames, which can be taken as a metaphor for self-destruction. The fear of not being able to recover from their struggles is evident in lines like "We're never gonna be the same" and "They cover up everything."
Overall, the song Save Me Now sheds light on the importance of seeking help when going through tough times instead of self-medicating and hiding away. It reminds us that there is always hope and that we should not be ashamed to ask for help.
