Attention
Doja Cat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, if you like it, just reach out and pet it
This one doesnโ€ฒt bite, it doesn't get aggressive
Show you how to touch it, hold it like itโ€ฒs precious
It don't need your lovin', it just needs attention

(Love me) It needs, it seeks affection
(So sweet) Hungry, it fiends attention
(Hungry) It needs, it seeks affection
(Baby) Hungry, it fiends (Yeah, yeah)

Look at me, look at me, you lookinโ€ฒ?
My taste good, but I just had to redirect my cookinโ€ฒ
I coulda been an opener, I redirect the bookin'
I readed all the comments sayinโ€ฒ, "D, I'm really shooketh"
"D, you need to see a therapist, is you lookinโ€ฒ?"
Yes, the one I got, they really are the best
Now I feel like I can see you bitches is depressed
I am not afraid to finally say shit with my chest
Lost a lil' weight, but I ainโ€ฒt never lost a tushy
Lookin' good, but now my bald head match my
Lookin' good, but now they all sayinโ€ฒ that Iโ€ฒm ugly
Boo-hoo, my nigga, I ain't sad you wonโ€ฒt fuck me
I'm sad that you really thought your ass was above me
Youโ€ฒre lucky 'cause I just paid your bill with a reply
I just made your money pile knee-high
I just made your stats peak, now you got a blue check
Now you can afford to go and reinstall a new wig
Now you can afford to not be lousy, go and do shit
Talk your shit about me, I can easily disprove it, itโ€ฒs stupid
You follow me, but you don't really care about the music

Baby, if you like it, just reach out and pet it
This one doesn't bite, it doesnโ€ฒt get aggressive
Show you how to touch it, hold it like itโ€ฒs precious
It don't need your lovinโ€ฒ, it just needs attention

(Love me) It needs, it seeks affection
(So sweet) Hungry, it fiends attention
(Hungry) It needs, it seeks affection
(Baby) Hungry, it fiends (Yeah)

Look at me, look at me, I'm naked
Vulnerability earned me a lot of bacon
I put a thong all in my ass and taught you how to shake it
I paid all my respect to those who taught me how to make it
And now I reap the benefits with no confrontation
Yโ€ฒall fall into beef, but that's another conversation
Iโ€ฒm sorry, but we all find it really entertainin'
'Cause we all wanna see them slip and fall right on their faces
And we all wanna be the one to see the devastation
Not be in it, but ainโ€ฒt the bad press good?
The disrespectโ€ฒs real, how this Patek look?
Pull out the checkbook, now why yo neck crook?
I never learn to "superstar" from a textbook
Talkin' โ€ฒbout "she fallin' off, why she get booked?"
Man, I been humbled, Iโ€ฒm tired of all the deprecation
Just let me flex, bruh, just let me pop shit
"Why she think she Nicki M? She think she hot shit"
Huh, I never gave a F, go stir the pot, bitch
I got y'all head all in the dirt just like an ostrich
Of course you bitches comparinโ€ฒ Doja to who the hottest

Baby, if you like it, just reach out and pet it
This one doesn't bite, it doesn't get aggressive
Show you how to touch it, hold it like itโ€ฒs precious
It donโ€ฒt need your lovin', it just needs attention

(Love me) It needs, it seeks affection
(So sweet) Hungry, it fiends attention
(Hungry) It needs, it seeks affection
(Baby) Hungry, it fiends

Okay, cute

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Doja Cat's song Attention can be interpreted in many ways, but at its core, the song is about the need for attention and validation. The first verse suggests that the subject being referred to is not a person, but rather a pet or something to be touched and cared for. Throughout the song, the use of hunger as a metaphor further emphasizes the need for attention and affection. Doja Cat even goes as far as to mention the hunger for attention being greater than the need for constant love.

The second verse touches on Doja Cat's personal experiences with attention. She talks about redirecting her career and how she's dealt with criticism. Despite it all, she maintains a confident and empowered attitude. The line "I am not afraid to finally say shit with my chest" is a declaration of not allowing anyone to bring her down. Doja Cat also touches on the idea of bad press being good press and how she's learned to deal with the negative attention.

Overall, Attention is a bold and assertive song about wanting and needing attention and validation. It also explores themes of empowerment, self-confidence, and the power of perseverance.

She delivered her point loud and clear.

she got hate for being authentic despite hurting no one. She got deliberately misunderstood. This happened to every celebrity with social media at some point and they all started censoring themselves (e.g. Lizzo, Cardi B) because it wasn't worth the headache and losing the brand deals. Hell, even JLaw got tired of the hate, retreated for years and she doesn't even have socials!

But Doja said fuck it. Because that ain't fun. She clearly wasn't enjoying herself, she said that many times (and she got hate for that as well).

So she just went out there, reestablished herself as that person who dgaf, a troll even. This is her art and this is the artist. This is the persona she wants to share with you. Take it or leave it.

She doesn't need the brand deals, she makes enough money. You gotta respect her for that.

@alinalis5676

you can really tell when an artist is creating from their heart and this song hits different , I didnโ€™t know what she meant by all her previous stuff being a cash grab but I see it now , this is so authentic and refreshing and unique I fucking love it

@bi.fruitsalad

Exactly because it didnโ€™t truly align with her and wasnโ€™t truthful like this song. This song isnโ€™t โ€œfor the moneyโ€ compared to her old songs (the ones after she gained popularity) itโ€™s her speaking her truth and not giving a f and Iโ€™m so here for it!
