Fairytale
Doll Patrol Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A story unwritten
Its all in my head
Ill tell you the details
As we lie in bed
And far from the surface
It all seems serene
But under the darkness
The truth lies unseen
And after the wreckage
The fairytale ends
And all of my hero's are gone in the end

Well maybe im supposed to write a song
Maybe im supposed to tell the sad sad details of it all
Maybe if they gave me one more chance
I wouldn't have been blinded by the cruel cruel details of the world

And if I must tell you
The truth is untold
The lies will soon surface
A heart will grow cold
Forgetting the purpose we all lose our minds
But swallow the pre-nup and things seem just fine
The price & the princess are buried alive
The world we once knew it no longer survives

Well maybe im supposed to write a song
Maybe im supposed to tell the sad sad details of it all
Maybe if they gave me one more chance
I wouldn't have been blinded by the cruel cruel details of the world

The fairytale ends…
The fairytale ends….

Well maybe im supposed to write a song
Maybe im supposed to tell the sad sad details of it all
Maybe if they gave me one more chance
I wouldn't have been blinded by the cruel cruel details of the world

Well maybe im supposed to write a song
Maybe im supposed to tell the sad sad details of it all

Maybe if they gave me one more chance
I wouldn't have been blinded by the cruel cruel details of the world

Overall Meaning

The Doll Patrol's song Fairytale is a reflection on the harsh realities of life that often go unnoticed or ignored. The lyrics open with the lead singer admitting that what follows is a story that is only in her head, but she proceeds to recount the tale to her lover as they lie in bed. Though everything on the surface appears calm and peaceful, the darkness hidden beneath reveals that the fairytale is just like any other: it ends in wreckage, leaving heroes dead and dreams in ruins. As the song continues, she admits that perhaps the reason she is supposed to write this song is to document the harsh and bitter truths of life in a melancholy lament. She's contemplating whether she might have avoided being blinded by the cruel details of the world if she was given a second chance. She then concludes that the fairytale must inevitably end as the consequences of neglect and complicated love reveal themselves.

The song raises the issue of of self-awareness and accountability as the singer realizes that her own shortcomings and failures have contributed to the tragic end of her fairytale. The song reflects on the notion that we all lose our way in the end when we forget our purpose, though the cost of that mistake can be high. In some cases, the cost is buried deep, and it can hide beneath a false happiness in which the princesses are compelled to play their roles of dutiful obedience, even if buried alive. In the end, she realizes that perhaps the reason she is supposed to write the song is to learn from her mistakes and not repeat her errors, as well as to remind her fans that the fairytale always ends in tragedy when we neglect the bitter realities of life.
