Yellow Roses
Dolly Parton Lyrics

Hello you said the day we met
Handing me a yellow rose
You asked me out
And to your surprise
And to mine I said I'd go
I thought it so romantic
Though we'd only met
I still said yes
To a single yellow rose
And for years to come
You were the one
To sleep with me at night
To laugh and talk
And share my thoughts
And hold me when I'd cry
And on every occasion
And for no good reason to
A big bouquet or a single yellow rose
Was sent from you
Yellow roses
The color of sunshine
You loved me at one time
Why did you have to go
Yellow roses
Are you sending your new love
My bright yellow rose buds
I still love you so
I never see a yellow rose
That I didn't think of you
It's still my favorite flower
Though the yellow's turned to blue
The day you left my teardrops fell
Upon your farewell not
You said goodbye like you said hello
With a single yellow rose
Yellow roses
The color of sunshine
You loved me at one time
Why did you have to go
Yellow roses
Are you sending your new love
My bright yellow rose buds
Oh I still love you so
Yellow roses
The color of sunshine
You loved me at one time
Why did you have to go
Sweet yellow roses
Are you sending your new love
My bright yellow rose buds
I still love you so
Dolly Parton's song Yellow Roses is a love song that speaks to the feelings of a woman who still holds deep affection for her ex-lover, whom she addresses as "you" in the song. The song is about a love affair that began on a romantic note when the man, upon meeting the woman, handed her a yellow rose and asked her out. Though they had just met, she found him sweet and bold and agreed to go out with him. The yellow rose that he gave her was romantic and memorable, and for years, they were together, sharing laughter, talks, and tears. The man would often send her a bouquet of yellow roses or a single rose, just because, and she loved the gesture.
However, something went wrong, and the man left, leaving the woman heartbroken. She still remembers him and loves him, as represented by the yellow rose that she never sees without thinking of him. The yellow rose, which symbolizes sunshine, is a reminder of the good times and the bright future they once had. The chorus, which repeats the line "Yellow roses are you sending your new love my bright yellow rosebuds? I still love you so" suggests that despite everything, she still loves him and wishes he would come back.

This is Dolly's most underrated #1 single (it reached the top of the country charts in late 89 and it was her last #1 solo hit). Such a gem!
