Put It Off Until Tomorrow
Dolly Parton & Kris Kristofferson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Put it off until tomorrow oh oh you've hurt me enough today
You say our love is over that you have found another
You say you're goin' away but leave me tomorrow oh oh you've hurt me enough today
You've hurt me enough today I can't believe the words you say
I must accept the fact you won't be coming back
So stay just one more day loneliness isn't far away
Put it off until tomorrow oh oh you've hurt me enough today
Put it off until tomorrow oh oh you've hurt me enough today

Overall Meaning

In "Put It Off Until Tomorrow," Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, and Loretta Lynn have collaborated to create a stunning song that explores the complex emotions of love, heartbreak, and moving on. The song talks about a lover who wants to leave their partner for someone else and hurts them in the process. However, instead of leaving right away, they decide to put off their departure until tomorrow. The lyrics suggest that the singer is hurt and cannot believe that their partner is leaving them. Yet, they choose to put off facing the harsh reality until the next day.

The song is an honest and relatable depiction of how people can postpone dealing with difficult situations, hoping that time can heal the hurt. It captures the vulnerability of a person dealing with heartbreak and the need for an extra day to brace themselves for the inevitable loneliness that's about to come.

A beautiful song. Originally Dolly recorded it with Bill Phillips in the 60s.

Dolly... what a terrific songwriter and all round entertainer. Such a well constructed tune she wrote with her Uncle Bill Owens. Love it! Kris is too cute for comfort as well!

DrAlexandraBrooks On a sad note, Bill Owens was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a couple of years ago. He is the third person in Dolly's family to have the disease. Her mother and another uncle are the other two. So far though, none of the children ( and Dolly is one of twelve!) have been diagnosed with it.

Awww... that's a shame. I didn't know about that. It seems to touch most families these days. Such an insidious disease. I have been helping out looking after my cousin's mother-in-law with the disease this Summer. It's a baffling, trifling, malady if there ever was one. A thief of the highest order. Robs everything but your soul.
