Sympathy
Domenico Savino And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now when you climb into your bed tonight
And when you lock and bolt the door
Just think about out in the cold and dark
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round

And sympathy is what we need my friends
And sympathy is what we need
And sympathy is what we need my friends
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round
No there's not enough love to go 'round

Now half the world hates the other half
And half the world has all the food
And half the world lies down and quietly starves
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round

And sympathy is what we need my friends
And sympathy is what we need
And sympathy is what we need my friends
'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round
No there's not enough love to go 'round

And sympathy is what we need my friends
And sympathy is what we need
And sympathy is what we need my friends

'Cause there's not enough love to go 'round
No there's not enough love to go 'round

Overall Meaning

The song "Sympathy" by Domenico Savino and His Orchestra is a poignant commentary on the world's lack of love and empathy for one another. The lyrics start with an invitation to introspect, as the singer urges the listener to think about those who are out in the cold and dark, neglected and forgotten by a world that does not have enough love to go around. The chorus then insists that what we need is sympathy, as we are all caught up in a world that is divided in half, with one half having everything and the other half suffering in quiet desperation. The song ends with a powerful repetition of the need for sympathy, as a reminder that love and empathy are essential for a better world.

The song's lyrics are a stark reminder of the humanitarian crises that many people around the world face each day. The disparity between the haves and have-nots is a reality that continues to persist in modern times. The song was written in the mid-20th century, during a time of significant social and political upheaval, with the Cold War and the civil rights movement. The lyrics are still relevant today, as inequality and injustice persist globally.

C Porter

I'm not true, There were many famous Italian singers back then! Enrico Caruso is one example, then there's Django Reinhardt who invented Gypsy Jazz

Dante P

@C Porter not all of them did, but many felt they had to for and advantage. Reinhardt was a french gypsy not italian, also. eddie lang aka salvatore massaro was another who changed his name. tony sbarbaro often called himself spargo, but this was for pronunciation difficulties.
