The Third Man Theme
Don Cherry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When a zither starts to play
You'll remember yesterday
In its haunting strain
Vienna lives again
Free and bright and gay
In your mind a sudden gleam
Of a half forgotten dream
Seems to glimmer when you hear the third man theme

Once again there comes to mind
Someone that you left behind
Love that somehow didn't last
In that happy city of the past
Does she still recall the dream
That rapture so supreme
When first she heard the haunting third man theme?

Carnivals and carousels and Ferris wheels and parasols
The Danube nights, the dancing lights again will shine
The zither's sweet refrain
Keeps swirling in your brain
Like new may wine
Strauss waltzes, candle-glow
And the laughter of long ago
Fill the magic chords and make it seem like today

You never knew that you could be
Enchanted by a melody
The years will never drive it out
You don't know why
It's something you can't live without
You hear it in the twilight hush
And in the morning traffic rush
A song that's always new
In your heart a part of you
Oh, shines so brightly when you hear the third man theme

When a zither starts to play
You'll remember yesterday
In its haunting strain
Vienna lives again
Free and bright and gay
In your mind a sudden gleam
Of a well remembered dream
Seems to glimmer when you hear the third man theme

Once again there comes to mind
Someone that you left behind
Love that somehow didn't last
In that happy city of the past
Does she still recall the dream
That rapture so supreme
When first she heard the haunting third man theme?

Carnivals and carousels and Ferris wheels and parasols
The Danube nights, the dancing lights again will shine
The zither's sweet refrain
Keeps swirling in your brain
Like new may wine
Strauss waltzes, candle-glow
And the laughter of long ago
Fill the magic chords and make it seem like today

You never knew that you could be
Enchanted by a melody
The years will never drive it out
You don't know why
It's something you can't live without
You hear it in the twilight hush
And in the morning traffic rush
A song that's always new

In your heart a part of you
Oh, shines so brightly when you hear the third man theme

Overall Meaning

The Third Man Theme, famously known for being the theme song of the 1949 British film noir “The Third Man”, is a tune that captures the essence of Vienna in its zither-led melody. The lyrics embrace the nostalgic feelings of the past and lost love that remain in your heart and mind. The zither instrument is said to be able to evoke memories and emotions that once seemed distant and faraway. The theme song takes you on a trip down memory lane, as it allows you to reminisce about the good old days and remember the people and places that once made you happy.

The opening lines of the song depict the power of the zither to transport you to another place and time. As the zither plays, the haunting melody invokes memories of Vienna in its prime; a place that was once free, bright and gay. The song draws a correlation between the zither and memories of the past, a half-forgotten dream, and lost love. The Third Man Theme has the power to unleash a wave of emotions as one can visualize the aura of Vienna in their mind's eye, with its dancing lights, carousels, Ferris wheels, parasols, and the Danube river.

The overall tone of the lyrics is one of longing and nostalgia as they take you down memory lane, weaving a tapestry of Vienna’s heydays. The song, quite simply, is a beautiful ode to the past and its memories, and how enchanting a melody can be.

As I said on Cherry's video for Thinking of You, he had a terrific pop singer's voice. Smooth, clear, and melodious.

Mark Gallagher

@alexanuchid The record came out in 1950 and reached #22 on the charts but Don did not get cresit for it. The Victor Young Orch was on the label and Don who at that time was a nobody was paid only $25 for singing it. Later when he had recorded several hits of his own, later printings of the record included the name Don Cherry.

Judy Aja

I didn't know he sang this. Don lives in Vegas and his voice sounds beautiful as ever.... have met him and his wonderful wife, Francine....they are great people!!

Mark Gallagher

@jplum Yes I've been to Don'e Web Site, very good. Don Cherry along with Tony Bennitt are about the last of the big 50's Male Pop Singers left alive. Which is sad as they will never be music like that again.

jplum

Don Cherry has had a great career and is still going. Singing as great as ever. Don was a great golfer as well. Don and his wife Francine have a great website check it out at doncherry.us

Janelle Giese

Wonderful song and video ... BUT! Shame for giving away the ending. 😳(😂)

Daniel Arick

The Music Prof78 channel recently had this as hits archive of 1950

Mark Gallagher

Don Cherry had a fine voice and had some fine hits. But he couldn't deside if he wanted to be a Pro Golfer or a Pro Singer so he didn't reach the top in either.
