Heaven And Paradise
Don Julian & The Meadowlarks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil
The devil is never a maker
The less that you give, you're a taker
So it's on and on and on, it's heaven and hell
Oh well
The lover of life's not a sinner
The ending is just a beginner
The closer you get to the meaning
The sooner you'll know that you're dreaming
So it's on and on and on, oh it's on and on and on
It goes on and on and on, Heaven and Hell
I can tell
Fool, fool
Oh uh
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Well if it seems to be real, it's illusion
For every moment of truth, there's confusion in life
Love can be seen as the answer, but nobody bleeds for the dancer
And it's on and on, on and on and on and on and on and on and on
They say that life's a carousel
Spinning fast, you've got to ride it well
The world is full of kings and queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
It's heaven and hell, oh well
And they'll tell you black is really white
The moon is just the sun at night
And when you walk in golden halls
You get to keep the gold that falls
It's heaven and hell, oh no
Fool, fool
You've got to bleed for the dancer
Fool, fool
Look for the answer
Fool, fool, fool

Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil
The devil is never a maker

Overall Meaning

The song "Heaven and Paradise" by Don Julian & The Meadowlarks is a compelling commentary on the duality of life. The lyrics proclaim that doing wrong is evil and the devil is never creative but only destructive. If someone gives less, they become a taker. Life is an endless cycle of heaven and hell, and everyone is a fool to believe otherwise. The lover of life is not a sinner, but instead, the end is just the beginning of a new cycle. As we get closer to the meaning of life, we will realize that it is all a dream. Love may seem like the answer, yet no one bleeds for the dancer.

The song emphasizes that life is a carousel that spins fast, and one needs to ride it well. Kings and queens dominate the world, they blind your eyes, and they steal your dreams. They say that black is white, and the moon is the sun at night. Nevertheless, when you walk in golden halls, you can keep any gold that falls. In the end, life is a journey of heaven and hell, and we must find our purpose and answers for ourselves.

Robert, I am writing an article about the vocal groups in Los Angeles in the 1950s. Would it be possible to interview your dad?

Matt - I'd be interested in reading what you have if finished.

Although it's been two years since you posted your comment about your father (of which I am grateful), I can't help but be curious about how your dad felt to be part of one of the few interracial groups to achieve some degree of fame during the doo-wop era. Whether younger aficionados realize it or not, groups featuring black and white personnel during those pre-civil rights days were not the common thing. In fact, being the sole "white guy" in a mostly black group was quite rare (the Del Vikings is the only other group that I can think of with a similar lineup). You have every reason to be proud of your father for his willingness to overlook the negative vibes he may have received for being part of a "colored group" for the sake of the beautiful sound they produced. This song is one of the most-played doo wop classics in the music firmament. So glad to hear from you.

I went to school with the Meadowlarks and was in Acapella Choir with them. We performed in varies singing contest and always won , thanks to Don Julian & the Meadowlarks. I remember when he wrote the song Heaven in Paradise and they would sing it in the bus that was taking us to perform outside of our school. He was loved by everyone. Not just because of his talent, but because he was so nice, pleasant, well mannered & loving to everyone
