All Alone
Don Mescall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well the seasons are changing,
Outside this taxi cab window,
The city is breathing me in.
The driver is reading my face,
Through his rear-view mirror,
And I'm falling apart at the seams.

I was thinking this morning,
I had these words in my pocket,
You would have laughed,
If you'd heard what they'd say.
But it's so cold in these shoes,
And I'm numb to the bone,
And the world owes me nothing today.

Chorus:
Every time I close my eyes,
I see your pale blue lips,
And your frozen smile.
I want to hold you close,
I wanna bring you home,
You left us way too early,
Left us all alone.

Well we carried you back,
On that cold winters morning,
In silence my brothers and me.
With arms round each other,
Steps counting heartbeats,
We moved down these uneven streets.

Chorus:
Every time I close my eyes,
I see your pale blue lips,
And your frozen smile.
I want to hold you close,
I wanna bring you home,
You left us way too early,
Left us all alone.

Rays of light,
Touch my soul,
It's so hard,
Letting go.

We laid you down there,
In the earth on the hill,
Looking over the water so blue.
And I'm miles out of nowhere,
I'm lost in this moment,
Constantly thinking of you.

Chorus:
Every time I close my eyes,
I see your pale blue lips,
And your frozen smile.
I want to hold you close,
I wanna bring you home,
You left us way too early,

Left us all alone,
All alone.

Overall Meaning

The song "All Alone" by Don Mescall is about loss, grief and moving on. The first stanza sets the scene of the singer being in a taxi cab, looking out at the changing seasons, feeling as if the city around them is consuming them. The driver is peering at the singer through the rear-view mirror and the singer feels like they are falling apart at the seams. The second stanza mentions that the singer had some words in their pocket that they thought would make someone laugh, but they never got the chance to use them. The coldness of their shoes and numbness of their body conveys the disconnection the singer feels towards the world and how they believe the world owes them nothing.

The chorus of the song describes the singer's memory of the person they have lost, including their pale blue lips and frozen smile. They express the desire to hold them close and bring them home because they left too early, leaving the singer and their loved ones all alone. The third stanza describes the funeral procession and how the singer and their brothers carried the person they lost down the uneven streets with their hearts heavily beating.

In the last stanza, the rays of light touch the singer's soul, but they are finding it challenging to let go. They recount the act of burying the person they lost on the hill, overlooking the blue water, feeling miles away from everything and lost in that moment. The chorus is repeated to highlight the intense emotions the singer is feeling and their desire to hold the person they lost close, even though they know they are all alone.

Don supported and we actually wanted him to keep going..forgot all about Brian Kennedy! Innocent Run is one of my favourite albums and I’m so pleased Don is still writing and recording.
