Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jones' upbringing was rough. He struggled between wanting to be a musician and to be a member of a street gang. After a brush with death, Jones left the gang and focused on a music career forming the group Porscha. However, Jones was gaining notice as a writer penning songs for established R&B acts such as Usher, producing the singer's 1995 hit, "Think of You", 702's "Get It Together" and also wrote for groups such as Brownstone and Silk.
In 1996, he signed with LaFace Records and released his debut album, My Heart, which included his hit cover of Stevie Wonder's 1976 ballad "Knocks Me Off My Feet". It wasn't until 1999 however that Jones began to establish himself as a R&B hit maker with the album, Where I Wanna Be. The album yielded the number-one hits such as "U Know What's Up", which featured TLC member Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes and the title track. Other hits included "Shorty (Got Her Eyes on Me)" and "This Luv".
In 2002, Jones released the gold-selling Life Goes On album, which featured the hits, "You Know That I Love You" and "Put Me Down" featuring Styles P.. Four years later, he released his fourth album, Journey of a Gemini, which featured the Tim & Bob hit, "I'm Gonna Be", which became a big hit on Urban AC. Jones is currently writing songs for Usher, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey on their upcoming albums.
It's So Hard
Donell Jones Lyrics

Got the grizzy locked in the stizzy
Pop the clizzy goin' sixty down a one-wizzy
Drunk pissy, tryin to cruise through the avenue
While my peoples is poppin' bottles up in Sue's rendezvous
Fuck that, spun the you-ey lost a hubcap
It's back to the shack, came back and now, "What's that?"
Straight from Paris, checkin' Gaby's new baby carriage
Fresh out the dealer, got the Tec for the squealers
Wear a vest for the killers, nothin' less 'cause it's reala
In the Big Apple, where it's quick to get your shit tackled
Enemies spit at you, best friends kidnap you
Trust no one (eh eh) got beef bust yo' gun
You don't need no one (nope) talkin' bout that you owe him
I'ma go for dolo, Scarface without Manolo
One deep, I be solo, bustin' heat, throwin bolos, it's hard
[Chorus]
And it's so hard, yeah
Niggas wanna be like Pun, but they don't bust they guns
And it's so hard
Niggas wanna fuck my wife, niggas wanna take my life
But it's so hard
(It's hard work baby)
(I just lost a hundred pounds, I'm tryin' to live)
I ain't goin' nowhere I'm stayin' alive baby
That's my wife, I paid for them titties
Get your own, your own, ya heard?
Niggas wanna fuck my wife, niggas wanna take my life
But it's so hard
Rollin with the Squad, we like Gods
Catch us at the bar-de-bar-de-bars
Strip bars in Miami, almost came home with the Grammy
Next year, bringin home three for the family
Watch me, you can catch it live on the Hitachi
Poppin' shit like a Nazi, iced out like DeBiase
Fuck that, Liberace
Fo'-X Versace, somebody stop me!
Never that, skee-yu! Where my niggas at?
Uptown! Uptown! You know you feelin' that
"Cash Rule," hardcore you can dance to
That old Biggie give me, "One More Chance "
Take a glance and I'm off with yours
With both hands take off my drawers
And jerk me like the Source Awards
I love hip-hop, I ain't even probably the best lyricist alive
Terror Squad nigga stop sleepin, ooh yeah
What you say your name was again?
And I know you from where? Elementary school?
I don't know you man!
Money, not you again
Go that way!
Loser!
Niggas wanna be like Pun, but they don't bust they guns
And it's so hard
Niggas wanna fuck my wife, niggas wanna take my life
But it's so hard
Yeah, 'cause you ain't fuckin' my wife, takin' my life
And if you just hatin' just walk on by
All you haters just walk on by
The song "It's So Hard" by Donell Jones is a rap and hip-hop track that showcases the lifestyle of individuals living in urban areas. It is released in 2000 as a part of his album "Where I Wanna Be". The lyrics of the song depict the struggle and challenges that come with living in the big city. The artist talks about driving his cherry red one-fifty while being under the influence of alcohol, and he discusses the violence, threats and betrayals that are a part of everyday life. He talks about having to trust no one and being prepared for any altercation that might come his way.
The chorus of the song presents a contrasting view of his life as an artist where he expresses how people want to be like him but are not willing to work hard for it. He speaks about the haters and the people who want to take his life and wife but also encourages them to walk on by. He declares himself as the best lyricist alive, and his love for hip-hop in the final verse.
