BIOGRAPHY
Jake H. met Casey a few hours after she was born. He was disappointed she was a girl and cried. Eighteen years later, he got over it, and they started a band. A few years after that, they suckered another kid named Jake into playing bass. After shooting down Casey’s idea to name the band Casey and the Jakes, they became Donora.
Jake H. plays the drums, triggers samples from his octapad, and sings backup. Casey sings and tries very hard to remember the right guitar chords to play. Jake C. plays bass and reminds Casey which key each song starts in. Together they play melodic, dance-worthy, garage rock.
Their demo was recorded live by Casey and Jake H’s Dad, in his garage studio. No overdubs. No vocal tuning. Seriously.

I play hide and Seek, my turn comes to count, I'm still searching, it is dark.
I will run away, to look up strategy, but I know how to look at you.
I know everything, hold me in your arms, I make every day feel new.
New, new new, new new
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
I'll be the one you want
Whoa oh, whoa oh
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I'll be the one you want
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I try to compete, but I disqualify, before I even begin
Something that I urge, something that I try, best not to go for the win
I will run away, to hold it steadily, I know how to hold your hand
When you're feeling beat, no one could relate, but you know I will understand
Eh and stand eh and stand eh and
Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I'll be the one you want
Whoa oh, whoa oh
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I'll be the one you want
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not a champion but
I am, I am, I am the one you want
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not a champion but
I am, I am, I am the one you want
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not a champion but
I am, I am, I am the one you want
I'm not, I'm not, I'm not a champion but
I am, I am, I am the one you want
I'll be the one you want
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I'll be the one you want
Whoa oh, whoa oh
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I'll be the one you want
Whoa oh, whoa oh
I'm a champion
I'm a champion
I'm the one you want
I'm the one you want
The lyrics to Donora's song "Champion" speak to feeling inadequate or incapable of success in traditional ways, such as in a race or game of hide and seek. The singer states that they will always come in last, even with a head start, and they struggle to find success in things they attempt.
However, the lyrics take a turn when the singer addresses their significant other. The singer acknowledges that they may not be a champion in the typical sense, but they are the champion for their partner. They can make everyday feel new and offer understanding and support when their partner is feeling beaten down. The chorus repeatedly affirms that they will be the one that their partner wants, despite any perceived shortcomings.
Overall, the song speaks to the idea that success and worth as a person are not solely defined by traditional metrics or accomplishments. Love and companionship can offer a different kind of success and fulfillment.
