You Never Come Closer
Doris Lyrics

to where they meant to be
My ship's not a coaster
crawling in the leaf
A landslide in lusting
beside a Southern sea
No one has seen
where they have been
You never consider
although you try to beg
Another kingdom
through here from the West
For no one has seen them
No one is gonna test
Go with the wind
Nothing can help but me
(Bass Solo)
And Jupiter spot me
it feels like you can swim
You feel the ship coming(?)
through clouds across the creek(?)
They taken me there
the time it takes to dream
Nobody else knows how it feels
but me
You never come closer...
(End)
The lyrics of the song "You Never Come Closer" by Doris explore themes of longing, desire, and a sense of isolation that comes with being the only one to have experienced something. The first verse describes a ship that is "not a coaster" but rather crawling in the leaf, perhaps suggesting a slow or steady progression rather than quick and turbulent movement. The singer paints a vivid image of a landslide happening beside a Southern sea, placing emphasis on the power of nature and the need for self-reliance. The line "No one has seen where they have been but me" illustrates a sense of being disconnected from others, despite being in the same place or having had the same experiences.
In the second verse, the singer addresses someone who is trying to persuade them to consider another kingdom that is coming from the West. The line "For no one has seen them, no one is gonna test" implies that the singer is hesitant to entertain the possibility of something new because no one else has experience with it, nor do they have the means to test it. The line "Nothing can help but me" illustrates this sense of self-reliance again, as if the singer is the only one with the power or ability to make a decision.
The final verse describes a feeling of floating in space, perhaps on a celestial body like Jupiter, and the ship is coming through clouds across a creek. The image is dreamlike and ethereal, suggesting that the singer is experiencing a sense of freedom or detachment from reality. The line "They taken me there the time it takes to dream" further emphasizes the dreamlike quality of the experience, and the line "Nobody else knows how it feels but me" underscores the sense of isolation and people's inability to truly know what someone else has experienced.

Slowly moving through life, without direction or purpose
A landslide in lusting
A huge uncontrollable desire
beside a Southern sea
Near the coast of the Southern sea
No one has seen
No one else has experienced
where they have been
The places that you have been
but me
Only you know

although you try to beg
Even though you plead
Another kingdom
A different way of living
through here from the West
Coming from the West
For no one has seen them
No one else has experienced them
No one is gonna test
No one is going to challenge
Go with the wind
Follow the path that life takes you on
Nothing can help but me
No one else can help me
And Jupiter spot me
Jupiter, please see me
it feels like you can swim
You feel like you can move freely
You feel the ship coming
You feel life pulling you towards something
through clouds across the creek
Through the mist, across the small stream
They taken me there
They have taken me to a new place
the time it takes to dream
In the same amount of time as a dream
Nobody else knows how it feels
No one else understands what it's like
but me
Only you know
You never come closer...
You never get any closer to where you were meant to be
