Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Heaven Tonight
Doris Day Lyrics

It's the best thing that I get to do
You make it easy and you're keeping it new
We'll be in heaven tonight we have changed
We're not just children playing
Grown-up games we're a little bit older but
Our love feels the same
It feels like heaven tonight
We'll play some music
That is soft and sweet on your guitar
Heat up the hot tub here's your back rub
And you know it's always true when I say
"I love you" close your eyes
Dream of us and you'll be safe inside
You're an angel and you light up the sky
It looks like heaven tonight
Take out the scrapbook
We'll turn some time back
And see the change that we made in
Those old photographs Since the first day
I feel the same day
And you know it's always true when I say
"I love you" loving you
It's stil the best thing that I get to do
You make it easy and you're keeping it new
We'll be in heaven tonight
See you in heaven tonight close your eyes
Feels like heaven tonight
The lyrics of Doris Day's song "Heaven Tonight" depict a deeply affectionate and loving relationship between two individuals. The singer expresses how loving their partner is the best thing they get to experience in life. The partner makes love effortless and continuously brings freshness into their relationship, renewing their love constantly. As a result of their strong connection, they are convinced that they will be in a state of blissful happiness tonight and have grown beyond the immaturity of childish games. Although they have aged, their love has remained unchanged and feels as heavenly as it did in the beginning.
The first paragraph emphasizes the ease and joy the singer feels in loving their partner. They express how their partner makes love effortless and brings novelty to their relationship, ensuring that things never become monotonous. The singer sees this as a sign that their love is transcendent, as it feels like heaven, a state of perfect happiness and contentment.
In the second paragraph, the lyrics delve into the intimate moments shared between the couple. The singer describes their routine tasks, such as stacking dishes and locking the back door, as mundane activities infused with love. They also mention playing sweet music on the guitar, relaxing in a hot tub, and providing back rubs. These acts of care and affection create a serene atmosphere where the couple expresses their love for each other. The singer proclaims their love, assuring their partner that when they close their eyes and dream of their love, they will feel safe and secure, like an angel lighting up the sky.
The third paragraph introduces the idea of nostalgia and reflection on their journey together. The couple is encouraged to take out a scrapbook, flipping through old photographs and reminiscing about the changes they have made in each other's lives. Despite the passage of time, the singer asserts that their love has remained constant since the very first day. This affirmation of unwavering love fulfills the singer's earlier claim that their love still feels heavenly regardless of any external changes.
The final paragraph restates the singer's conviction that loving their partner is the best experience in their life. Again, they emphasize how their partner makes love effortless and continuously keeps their relationship new and exciting. With the reaffirmation of their love, they anticipate being in heaven tonight, suggesting that their connection goes beyond the physical realm, providing them with a sense of complete happiness and fulfillment. The song concludes with a promise to meet again in heaven tonight, reinforcing the enduring nature of their love.
