Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Make Someone Happy
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's a thrill to have the world at your feet
The praise of the crowd, it's exciting
But I've learned that's not what makes a life complete
There's one thing you can do for the rest of your days
That's worth more than applause
Make someone happy
Make just one someone happy
Make just one heart the heart you sing to
One smile that cheers you
One face that lights when it nears you
One man you're ev'rything to
Fame if you win it
Comes and goes in a minute
Where's the real stuff in life to cling to
Love is the answer
Someone to love is the answer
Once you've found him, build your world around him
Make someone happy
Make just one someone happy
And you will be happy, too
Doris Day's song "Make Someone Happy" is a beautiful reminder that our true purpose in life should be to bring happiness to others. The opening lines of the song express how the sound of applause from an adoring crowd can be exciting and intoxicating, but it's not what brings lasting fulfillment. This message is alluded to throughout the song with the refrain "Make someone happy," which is repeated several times.
The words "Make just one someone happy" emphasizes that we don't need to do grandiose, attention-grabbing acts to bring joy to someone else's life. In fact, happiness can come from simple gestures such as a smile, a kind word, or taking the time to listen. The reference to one smile or one face that cheers you emphasizes the importance of forming meaningful connections with others, rather than chasing after fame and fleeting moments of admiration.
The last verse of the song contains the most poignant line, "Once you've found him, build your world around him," highlighting that having someone to love and cherish gives life true meaning. The song's overall message is clear: focusing on others and their happiness brings us true and lasting joy. It is a timeless reminder of what truly matters in life.
