Soft as the Starlight
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Soft as the starlight in the sky
Soft as the pillow on which I lie
Warm is the glow from the moon above
Warm is my heart that is filled with love

Love that only you can bring
Love as soft and warm as Spring
My heart knows the reason why
I feel soft as the starlit sky

Dreams become reality
Darling when you're near to me
So I'll dream of you and sigh
Soft as starlight in the sky

Love that only you can bring
Love as soft and warm as Spring
My heart knows the reason why
I feel soft as the starlit sky

Dreams become reality
Darling when you're near to me
So I'll dream of you and sigh
Soft as starlight in the sky

Soft as the starlight in the sky

Overall Meaning

"Soft as the Starlight in the Sky" is a classic love song by Doris Day, released in 1958. The song speaks about the gentle and warm feeling that love brings to the heart. The lyrics talk about the softness of starlight and pillows, which bring comfort to the soul. The glow of the moon above represents the warmth of love that fills the singer's heart. The central theme of the song is the power of love to make dreams become a reality.

The first two lines of the song, "Soft as the starlight in the sky, soft as the pillow on which I lie," evoke a sense of comfort and ease. The starlit sky and pillow on which the singer rests both offer a softness that signifies the tranquility that comes from being in love. The warmth of the moon represents the love shared between two people, while the spring-like warmth of the love, "love as soft and warm as Spring," represents the newness and freshness that love brings.

The song continues with the idea that the love shared by the singer and her lover is unique, "Love that only you can bring." The reason for the singer's softness is then explained, "My heart knows the reason why, I feel soft as the starlit sky." The singer goes on to say that when she is near her lover, dreams become a reality, and she sighs softly, "So I'll dream of you and sigh, soft as starlight in the sky."

The first I heard this was a couple days following her passing. Ohhh how I cried. I hope someday I can reach the acceptance stage of grief, but I don’t look for anything too soon. Not after following her since around 1957-8. She was like losing a part of the family I miss her and miss writing to her.some wounds aren’t easy to heal.
