Fully aware that he was dying of cancer, Jimmy Dorsey poured the last of his strength into recording "So Rare." Due to his rapidly failing health, he was able to perform on a few other tracks for his final label, Fraternity. Five days after Jimmy died in 1957, Fraternity had his band, now led by Lee Castle, record enough material to flesh out a full LP. "JD's Boogie Woogie" was one of those tracks. Compare it to "Boogie Woogie," a 1938 hit for brother Tommy Dorsey, who died in November 1956.

I find the later Jimmy Dorsey singles so interesting..I wonder where he was headed with his sound and what he would have sounded like in the 1960s. I had a closed friend 30 years older than me that was a street person of sorts and an expert on JD. Old Eddie picked cans on the street and carried an old Fisher Price tape recorder filled with Jimmy Dorsey tapes. We had long conversations about Dorsey and about life but Eddie got old and the streets were harsh to a 72 year old and Eddie died....

I realize that your comment is 4 years old, but I too wonder what Jimmy Dorsey would have done if he had lived a bit longer. He was attempting to go with the times with his band and it was working. No other band leader had a charted hit after the very early fifties except Jimmy. I still find it amazing that he was able to chart 3 records at the peak of height of the Rock & Roll Era 1957. "So Rare" hit the number 2 position, "June Night" hit 31, and "JD's Boogie Woogie" hit 77. The kids including this one embraced his new sound and loved it. Even though we loved Rock Roll.

He proved a point, but was gone before he could followup on it and perhaps blended the Big Band sound into the Rock & Roll music.

Dot records picked up the Fraternity masters and shipped out some promo 45's with "So Rare" on one side and "Jay Dee's Boogie Woogie" on the flip side. I've got the disc in my collection, but don't have any other details and the why and what-for. It is one great swing dance record, and nice to hear a big band rockin' with a bit more modern recording equipment.

J.D. Boogie Woogie, a song that has put young people on their feet for ever. Actually a better analysis would be a song that put you on your feet and made you feel young regardless of your age.

By the time that was recorded,JImmy Dorsey had since passed on.Alto saxophonist Dick Stabile was brought in the finish up the session Dorsey was to have done.Dorsey passed at the age of 53 due to lung cancer on 12 Jun 1957.For many years,there was a rumour going around stating that it was Stabile,not Dorsey,who did the solo on "So Rare" even though it sounded exactly like Dorsey.Skeets Herfurt,who worked with both Dorseys between 1934 and '39,tried to tell me it was Stabile.I let him go to his grave thinking it.Stabile was too flashy in his alto sax playing.

First heard this in 1956. Both the Dorsey brothers recorded this boogie. I have always liked Jimmy's the best. Maybe because it has a Big Band sound and Tommy's is more swing and smooth.

Bal Sagoth ?? The only song I remember is the theme which is just a rip off of "I want a new drug" by Huey Louis and the News, which is just crab 80s new wave anyways. 80s music is about as far as it gets from swing and big band. It's all about electronic sounds in the eighties...
Unless you meant the new garbage one with all chicks and I assume it has a fairly modern soundtrack

Just my two cent's worth: This is a nice tune and I'm not putting down but I have got to say that I still prefer the earlier version done by Tommy Dorsey's group. The T.D. version is a bit slower and bluesier..more of a "low down" sound. Oh well, to each his own.

@Cuppie4469 Tommy Dorsey choked to death in his sleep at age 51 on November 26, 1956 -- only a few months after presenting, in his televsion debut, a newcomer by the name of Elvis Presley. Jimmy died of cancer at age 53 on June 12, 1957, only days after being handed his gold record award for "So Rare" while lying in the hospital bed he would die in. Jimmy performed on "So Rare" but neither of his band's two follow-up hits, "June Night" and "JD's Boogie Woogie."
