Nobody but You
Doug Franklin & The Bluenotes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met you on a Sunday afternoon
Hiding out from the rain
Took a walk with you baby
cnd you talked away my pain

Five years passed and we have had
Our share of up and down
I gave you a home and all I own
Just to keep you around

My friends they say that I'm to good for such a fool

Nobody takes their time
Nobody makes my sun to shine
Nobody sees my signs
Nobody's fool but mine

I work my fingers to the bone for you
Somebody's got to pay those bills
Even though you ain't got a dollar to your name
Babe I love you still

My friends they tell me I can do much better than a fool like you

cnd though you don't know everything
You know about my love
I ain't gonna ever leave your side baby
Cause you were sent to me from above
Let my friends talk what they want to

I don't care bout what they say
I'm gonna be there for you baby
Until my dying day because

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Nobody but You" by Doug Franklin & The Bluenotes beautifully tell the story of a romantic relationship that has weathered various challenges over time. It starts by describing how the singer met their partner on a rainy Sunday afternoon and how the partner helped ease their pain through conversation and companionship. This sets the scene for a deep emotional connection that transcends mere physical attraction.

As the relationship progresses, the lyrics reveal that five years have passed, and despite the ups and downs, the singer has invested a lot in the relationship, offering their home and possessions to keep their partner by their side. This highlights the depth of the singer's commitment and love for their significant other, even in the face of criticism from friends who believe they deserve better.

The chorus of the song, with the repeated line "Nobody but You," reflects the singer's steadfast devotion and belief in their partner. It acknowledges that while others may not see the value in their relationship, for the singer, their partner is the one who brings light and joy into their life, despite any hardships or obstacles they may face together.

The lyrics also touch on the sacrifices the singer makes for their partner, working hard to support them financially even when their partner may not have much to contribute. Despite the external judgment and doubts from friends, the singer's unwavering loyalty and love for their partner shines through, emphasizing that their bond is unbreakable and worth fighting for, regardless of what others may say or think. Overall, the song captures the essence of profound love, devotion, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Good day from New York City. I wanted to provide some more background about "My Lucky Love" and about Doug Franklin, who is my husband. The song, which was the most successful of the records he made with the Blue Notes, registered on both the Billboard and Cash Box charts for several weeks. The recording was also released, on different labels, in Canada and Australia. In addition to the Marty Wilde recording, British covers were made by Johnny Duncan [Columbia 45-DB 4179] and by Mike Preston [Decca 45-F 11053]. I am rather partial to Douglas' version (for obvious reasons).

Following his solo career, Douglas was a choral artist singing everything from classical to rock. He sang under Bernstein and Solti at the New York Philharmonic, with Julius Rudel at the Caramoor Festival, for the American Ballet Theater's premiere of Stravinsky's "Les Noce,: in live performances with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and in many engagements at Carnegie Hall. He was a member of the Robert de Cormier singers, and made vocal arrangements for and sang with Naphtali "Tuli" Kupferberg and his group The Fugs. After that he was the lighting director and production stage manager for such concert artists as Harry Belafonte, Steve Laurence and Eydie Gorme, Nana Mouskouri and Chuck Mangione, touring across America, Canada, Europe and to Japan. THEN he became a studio manager and electronic graphics operator for television. He ended his working career as an administrative assistant to the Senior Minister of his church and at The Grolier Club.

As I tell people, I have had lots of jobs: Douglas has had lots of CAREERS! Anyway, we are so happy that you all like his music. :>)

@OldiesAl

@rockake

Thanks for posting this one. I first heard it back in 1976 or 1977 in a version recorded by Scandinavia´s king of rock´n roll Little Gerhard. I have searched for the original version eversince, but never found it. Have never heard Wilde´s version either.

@OldiesAl

I have to say I prefer Marty's version, it's more r'n'r than this ballad version

@TheWally243

This is the original, Marty Wilde was the British release. I've been waiting quite awhile for someone to post this. Thanks ferrarial. Now how about Randy Lee's "You Ain't Swingin' With Me".

@leonardguerette688

Haven't heard this in decades, and recall it well -- great oldies song! Take a listen to the similar "You are my lucky star" by Eddy Duchin from 1935...!!! {Also by Linda Scott and Gene Kelly, too} = Oldies songs when songs were MUSIC, NOT NOISE!
