Mad
Douglas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dancing bears around the room
They been drinkin’ all that whisky, they been drunk since noon.
There’s a bouncer standing at the door sayin’ come on in there’s room for more. It’s a mad, it’s a mad saloon.
Flyin’ chairs, a sonic boom
Makin eyes at the little girl with the sweet perfume.
There’s a biker in a fit of rage, ‘bout to drive his Harley on that stage It’s a mad, it’s a mad saloon
There’s a place where time stand stills Let your body do what it will.
I’ll be smilin’ and singing the tune,
In the mad, mad saloon.
Bonnie Sue is my cocktail dream.
Know I’ld buy the house a round just to watch her lean. There’s Alverati’s silver vial, he’s got the ladies all in single file It’s a mad, such a mad saloon.
There’s a place where time stand stills Let your body do what it will.
I’ll be smilin’ and singing the tune,
In the mad, mad saloon.
I need a piece, a piece of the action.
Life is a lease and I’m not drivin’ home. Where do you go to get some satisfaction? But tonight I ain’t gonna leave this bar alone.
There’s a place where time stand stills Let your body do what it will.
I’ll be smilin’ and singing the tune,

In the mad, mad saloon.
In the mad, In the mad saloon.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Douglas's song "Mad" depict a chaotic scene in a saloon where people are indulging in excessive drinking and unruly behavior. The reference to dancing bears and heavy drinking suggests a wild and uninhibited atmosphere, with patrons being intoxicated since noon. The bouncer at the door encouraging more people to join implies that the saloon is constantly filled with revelers seeking a good time. The phrase "it's a mad, it's a mad saloon" captures the frenzied and exciting ambiance of the place.

The line about flying chairs and a sonic boom adds to the sense of chaos and unpredictability. It suggests that even everyday objects in the saloon seem to defy gravity and cause an explosion of energy. The mention of a biker in a fit of rage hints at the potential for conflict or aggression within the establishment, with somebody ready to drive their Harley onto the stage. This further emphasizes the turbulent nature of the saloon.

The lyrics also introduce Bonnie Sue, who is described as a cocktail dream. This character appears to have a captivating presence, attracting the attention of the singer. The mention of Alverati and his silver vial, with ladies lining up, suggests some kind of intoxicating allure or perhaps a mystical element in the saloon. These elements contribute to the overall sense of madness.

The chorus highlights the idea of a place where time stands still, where people can let go of their inhibitions and let their bodies do as they please. This suggests that the saloon serves as an escape from the constraints of everyday life and a release for those seeking freedom and self-expression. The singer mentions "smiling and singing the tune" in this mad saloon, implying that they find joy and comfort in this chaotic environment.

The final verse delves into the singer's desire for excitement and satisfaction. They express a need to be part of the action, feeling that life is passing them by. The decision to not leave the bar alone suggests a longing for companionship and a willingness to embrace the madness of the saloon, forsaking the mundane for a more exhilarating experience.

Overall, the lyrics of "Mad" illustrate a scene of unbridled revelry and escapism in a lively and chaotic saloon. The song captures the thrilling energy and longing for excitement that draws people to such places, offering them a temporary respite from the ordinariness of everyday life.
