Years From Now
Dr. Hook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Years from now, I'll want you years from now,
And I'll hold you years from now, as I love you tonight.

You are my one true friend, always my one true friend,
And I'll love you till life's end, as I love you tonight.

I know this world that we live in can be hard now and then,
And it will be again, many times we've been down,
But still love has kept us together, the flame never dies;
When I look in your eyes, the future I see.

Wanting you years from now, and holding you years from now,
And loving you years from now, as I love you tonight.

I know this world that we live in can be hard now and then,
And it will be again, many times we've been down,
But still love has kept us together, the flame never dies;
When I look in your eyes, the future I see.

Wanting you years from now, and holding you years from now,
And loving you years from now, as I love you tonight.

Overall Meaning

The song Years From Now by Dr. Hook is a touching love ballad that expresses the songwriter's deep affection for his significant other. The lyrics evoke a sense of timelessness and commitment, as the singer professes his love for his partner both in the present moment and in the years to come.

The opening line "Years from now, I'll want you years from now" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is expressing his desire to be with his partner for the long haul, through all of life's ups and downs. He promises to cherish and hold on to the love they share, even as time passes and circumstances change.

The second verse reinforces this sentiment, as the singer refers to his partner as his "one true friend" and pledges to love them "till life's end." He acknowledges the challenges that life can bring, but remains confident that their love will endure. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes this idea, as the singer affirms his desire to want, hold, and love his partner both now and in the future.

Overall, Years From Now is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring power of love. It celebrates the beauty and resilience of human connection, and reminds us of the importance of treasuring the people we love most.

My husband and I were married in Oct. of /80 and we had this song played as our first dance as man and wife. well after 37 yrs, 2 months, and 10 days, I lost my best friend, my beloved, my beautiful man who could always make me laugh, my lover, my very best friend, to cancer. i can't stop crying but the words to this song will keep him in my heart forever. Especially the line that says, "I'll hold you years from how". because he was too sick to hold me before he left. My heart is broken.
