Dressy Bessy's first full-length release, Pink Hearts, Yellow Moons (1999) was a mixture of beat group drums, infectious songs, and the odd burst of harmonium. Further releases include California EP (2000), Sound Go Round (2002), and 2003's Dressy Bessy, which incorporated a harder guitar sound. 2003 also brought the compilation, Little Music: Singles 1997-2002. These albums were initially released on Kindercore Records of Athens, Georgia. Their songs, If You Should Try to Kiss Her and Just Like Henry were featured in the 1999 film But I'm A Cheerleader.
In late 2004, drummer Darren Albert left the band and was replaced in 2005 by Craig Gilbert. Later that year, the band signed to Transdreamer Records and recorded their fourth album, Electrified, which was released in June 2005. The band released their fifth album, HOLLERandSTOMP, on September 16, 2008.
Rob Greene died in January 2018.

Fingers shut together in the sand near the shoreline
Cover up your head
Don't let the rain make its straight line
He's going to the tip-top, it's been dry up there for some time now
Top of the inning for me
New friend in moonshine
Fingers stuck together in my hand near the score line
Don't let the rain make its straight line
I'm going for the tip-top, it's been dry up there for some time now
We don't mind waitin' around for ya, crowd
You might just lead us along anyhow
So why not figure it out?
Top of the inning for me, cool ray of sunshine
Fingers shut together in the sand near the shoreline
Cover up our heads
Don't let the rain make its sraight line
Get going to the tip-top, it's been dry up there for some time now
We're not sure how
We don't mind waitin' around for ya, crowd
You might just lead us along anyhow
So why not leave it alone for awhile?
Yeah, why not figure it out?
Top of the morning to you
From me to you
It's the top of the inning for me
From me to you
The lyrics of Dressy Bessy's song "New Song" appear to be a reflection of the singer's mindset and their aspirations. The first line, "Top of the morning to you, cool ray of sunshine," suggests the singer's positive outlook on life. The imagery of "Fingers shut together in the sand near the shoreline" and "Fingers stuck together in my hand near the score line" portrays a sense of intimacy and connectedness. The line "Cover up your head, Don't let the rain make its straight line" might be interpreted as a call to protect oneself from negativity.
The lines "He's going to the tip-top, it's been dry up there for some time now" and "I'm going for the tip-top, it's been dry up there for some time now" suggest the aspiration for success and the desire for change. The repetition of "We don't mind waitin' around for ya, crowd/You might just lead us along anyhow" may be interpreted as a willingness to follow others, with the caveat that the singer will not let go of their aspirations to reach the top.
The final lines "So why not leave it alone for awhile? Yeah, why not figure it out? Top of the morning to you, From me to you, It's the top of the inning for me, From me to you," may imply that the singer is determined to figure out what they want and how to achieve it, and that they are greeting the new day with a renewed sense of purpose and positivity.
