In 2006, Holcomb married his longtime friend and singing partner, Ellie Holcomb (nee Bannister), and relocated to her hometown of Nashville. The rest of the band, guitarist Nathan Dugger, bassist Rich Brinsfield, and drummer Jon Radford also lived in the same East Nashville area, hence the group name.
Their albums include "A Neighborly Christmas" (2007), "Passenger Seat" (2008), "A Million Miles Away" (2009), "Chasing Someday" (2011), "Through the Night: Live in the Studio" (2012), and "Good Light" (2013).
American Beauty
Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She was an American beauty
She was a long goodbye, she was the best alibi
She was an American beauty
With her Wayfarers on in the summer sun
Her touch felt like a loaded gun
Wish I had held her longer
A gorgeous vagabond, she was sweet but she was strong
She was an American beauty
She was déjà vu, she was a catch-22
She was an American beauty
Her blue eyes shine in the summer sun
Her kiss felt like a loaded gun
Wish I had held her longer
Wish I had held her long
Goodbye came like the morning sun
She fired shots from a loaded gun
Wish I had held her longer
Wish I had held her long
She was a good companion
Eyes like the Grand Canyon
She was an American beauty
The lyrics of "American Beauty" by Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors describe a mysterious and alluring woman who was both a source of pleasure and pain for the singer. The woman is referred to as an "American beauty" and is said to have eyes like the Grand Canyon. She was a good companion and a gorgeous vagabond, but also a catch-22 and the best alibi. The singer confesses that he wished he had held her longer because her touch and kiss felt like a loaded gun. Despite her sweetness, the woman was strong and her goodbye came unexpectedly, just like the morning sun.
On a deeper level, the lyrics may be interpreted as a commentary on the elusive and fleeting nature of the American Dream. The woman represents this dream, which promises happiness and success but is often difficult to grasp and maintain. The singer laments that he did not hold onto her longer because the American Dream is just as elusive and fleeting as the woman he describes.
