3. Dryer (USA)
During the mid-90s, if you were situated in the Saratoga Springs/Albany, NY area and had your ear fairly close to the ground, you may remember the band Dryer as being something of a club and college radio staple. The band reunited in 2010 to celebrate the release a 31 track colllection of released and unreleased material on the NJ based label Fake Chapter Records, and are currently rehearsing new material for a new album later in 2012 on the same label. Dryer is a co-ed, indie-rock trio who bore a resemblance to Superchunk and Velocity Girl, though they didn't completely exude the excitement of either. There were three Dryer full length CDs and multiple 7" eps that rolled off the presses between 1993 - 2002.

All you do is complain about everything
And you're not making sense
And you sit there and throw out all your stupid words
I never heard something that sounding so absurd
I see you hanging out with all your friends
And you tell me that you don't care about anything
I think you're talking as is
And you said you know me, but you don't know much
And you said you'd tell me, but you blame much
And you said you'll call me, but you're out of touch
And you said you love me, but you don't know much
"New Song" by Dryer seems to be a song about the frustrations of dealing with someone who becomes exhausting with their negativity and lack of coherence. The singer addresses this person directly, highlighting their tendency to complain about anything and everything without making any sense. The singer hears a bunch of "stupid words" that sound "absurd" to them, indicating that they can't understand what the person is trying to convey. It's like the person is trying to be heard for the sake of being heard rather than having something worthwhile to say.
The second verse dives deeper into the dynamic between the singer and the other person. The singer sees the other person hanging out with their friends, talking poorly about everything and everyone. The other person insists that they don't care about anything, which the singer views as disingenuous. They accuse the other person of just "talking as is," which could mean that the other person is pretending to have a certain attitude or mindset just to fit in with their friends. The chorus plays with the idea of the other person presenting a facade of understanding and affection for the singer, but it's superficial and not based on anything real.
Overall, "New Song" is a cautionary tale about the dangers of empty words and behavior. The singer is fed up with the other person's lack of sincerity and genuine emotion. It's a reminder that it's better to say nothing than to say something that doesn't mean anything.
