Bert Williams was one of the most famous "Negro" comedians ever to be showcased on Broadway in the early 20th Century (particularly in the "Ziegfeld Follies"). But his personal life was somewhat of a tragedy, and he died of pneumonia in 1922, at the age of 47. Duke Ellington wrote this touching "tone poem" of Bert, and recorded it on May 28, 1940.
