Around My Heart
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I let a song go out of my heart
It was the sweetest melody
I know I lost heaven 'cause you were the song

Since you and I have drifted apart
Life doesn't mean a thing to me
Please come back, sweet music,
I know I was wrong

Am I too late to make amends?
You know that we were meant to be more than just friends, just friends

I let a song go out of my heart
Believe me, darlin', when I say
I won't know sweet music until you return some day

Am I too late to make amends?
You know that we were meant to be more than just friends, just friends

I let a song go out of my heart
Believe me, darlin', when I say

I won't know sweet music until you return some day
I won't know sweet music until you return some day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Duke Ellington's song "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart" speak to the loss and longing that comes with the end of a relationship. The singer laments letting the "sweetest melody" slip away with the departure of their loved one. They describe feeling as though they have lost heaven because that person represented the music that had filled their life with joy and meaning. Without the music, life doesn't mean anything to them. The singer acknowledges their mistake and begs for the person to return, recognizing that they were meant to be more than just friends. They end the song expressing their hope that the music will return when this person comes back into their life.

The song speaks to the power that music can hold in our lives and the way that losing someone important can feel like losing a part of ourselves. The singer's longing for the return of the music is a metaphor for their desire to have their relationship restored. The lyrics are simple and straight-forward, but the emotion they express is palpable.

@stephencroce2033

@sensey07 well, here are the lyrics. Are there any laws that govern artistic interpretation?

It was the sweetest melody
I know I lost heaven
'Cause you were the song

Since you and I had drifted apart
Life doesn't mean a thing to me
Please come back sweet music
I know I was wrong

Am I too late
To make amends
You know that we were meant to be
More than just friends, just friends

I let a song go out of my heart
Believe me darling when I say
I won't know sweet music
Until you return someday

This is the very best of Duke's many,many wonderful compositions.First, Johnny Hodges on alto, then Harry Carney on Baritone sax; then Lawrence Brown on trombone, followed by more Hodges and Carney, followed by Barney Bigard on clarinet.Coda by Brown again and the Band chills out to end. This band was the greatest of all! They could have even beaten the 1938 New York Yankees with this talent. Any questions

@Conn30Mtenor

not his best orchestra. But I'm with you. His 1940's bands were his best.

Of big band jazz ensemble playing, there is nothing finer; it had everything great, ensemble work, yet individuality, teamwork, control, polish, and Tricky Sam for bars of glory.

@dingoswamphead

The quality of the recording is also superb. I love the interplay between the lead and rhythm instruments. Just savour Duke's gentle piano stabs amongst the lush orchestration and dynamics. t It is a lesson in how to arrange a great tune. Thanks so much for sharing this.
