Doin' the New Low Down
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It isn't alcohol no yaller gal at all
thrills me fills me with the pep I've got

I've got a pair of feet
That found a low down beat
Low down, down around a spot that's hot!

I've got no peace
I'm losin' my lease on livin'
Here's the how?
I'm tellin' you now to give in!

Oh, make 'em play that crazy thing again
I've gotta do that lazy swing again.
Heigh, ho, doin' the new low down.

I got my feet to misbehavin' now,
I got a soul that's not for savin' now.
Heigh, ho, doin' the new low down.

That dancin' demon has my feet in a trance,
'cause while I'm dreamin'
I go into that dance

And once you hear the haunting strain to it,

I'd like to bet you'll go insane to it.
Heigh, ho, doin' the new low down.

Overall Meaning

In Duke Ellington's song "Doin' the New Low Down," the singer describes the irresistible hold that music has over them. They sing, "It isn't alcohol no yaller gal at all / thrills me fills me with the pep I've got." This statement suggests that there is something about the lively music that is more energizing and enjoyable than anything else. The singer goes on to describe their "pair of feet / That found a low down beat / Low down, down around a spot that's hot!" This phrase emphasizes the physicality of the music and the way it inspires movement in the body.

The music is so addictive that the singer admits to "losin' [their] lease on livin'" because they can't resist dancing to it. They urge others to join them in giving in to the temptation of the music, singing, "Oh, make 'em play that crazy thing again / I've gotta do that lazy swing again. / Heigh, ho, doin' the new low down." The singer even suggests that the music has a hypnotic or demonic power over them, saying, "That dancin' demon has my feet in a trance, / 'cause while I'm dreamin' / I go into that dance." Overall, the song celebrates the joy and liberation that can come from letting the music take over.

Sweet and hot (muted) trumpet solo by Bubber Miley: very nice (1:05)! Also very nice are the vocals by Irving Mills! Great pictures, especially of the items connected with The Cotton Club (matchbook, silverware)! Thank you so much for sharing everything, Atticus!!! :^D 🎺 LP

Great transfer of this excellent performance. The band is very hot and hearing the bass and drums of Braud and Greer and how it works with the fantastic ensemble, the Hodges on soprano leading the sax section (and his later alto solo) and the tightness of the band shows how unique this band was.

The first 4 secs seem similar to the main tune of Wob-A-Ly Walk (1928).
