Don't Be That Way
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

April skies are in your eyes
But, darling, don't be blue

Don't cry
Oh, honey, please
Don't be that way

Clouds in the sky
Should never make you feel that way

The rain
Will bring the violets of May
Tears are in vain so, honey, please, don't be that way

As long as we
See it through
You'll have me
I'll have you

Sweetheart
Tomorrow is another day
Don't break my heart
Oh, honey, please, don't be that way

Don't cry
Oh, honey, please
Don't be that way

Clouds in the sky
Should never make you feel that way

The rain
Will bring the violets of May
Tears in vain
So, honey, please, don't be that way

As long as we
Will see it through
You'll have me
And I'll have you

Sweetheart
Tomorrow is another day
Don't break my heart
Oh, honey, please don't be that way

Don't cry
Don't cry, don't cry
Oh, honey, please, don't be that way
Oh, honey, please, don't be that way
Clouds in the sky
Dig those crazy sky
Should never make you feel that way
So don't be that way
Dig the rain
Pitter, pitter, pitter, pitter-patter
Bring the violets of may
Pitter-patter of the rain drops
Tears in vain
Tears, tears
So, honey, please don't be that way
Don't be that way
As long as we

Will see it through
Oh, baby, you'll have me
And I'll have you
Sweetheart

Tomorrow is another day
Tomorrow is another day
Don't break my heart

Oh, honey, please, don't be that way
Looky here, baby, don't cry
Oh, honey, please, don't be that way
Clouds in the sky

Should never make you feel that way
Yeah, don't cry
Honey, please, don't be that way

Clouds in the sky

Oh, honey, please, don't be that way
No, honey, I'll never be that way

Overall Meaning

Duke Ellington's 1938 hit, "B D B," is a love song that seeks to soothe its subject's worry and sadness through images of springtime joy. The song begins by acknowledging the presence of "April skies" in the subject's eyes, but urges the listener to "not be blue" and "don't cry." Ellington urges his lover to cheer up because "clouds in the sky should never make you feel that way." He reminds her that "the rain will bring the violets of May," and therefore "tears are in vain." Throughout the song, Ellington reassures his lover that they will see it through together, and that they will have each other.

Ellington's powerful jazz chord progressions and orchestral arrangements dramatically illustrate his intentions. The song begins with a slow, tense introduction that quickly moves into the full band performing short, punctuated phrases. The song's form is theme and variations, which allows for the band to freely improvise within the song's structure. This improvisatory style is a hallmark of jazz, and Ellington was one of the pioneers of it. The song was also notable for its use of unusual instrumentation, including muted trumpets and a bass clarinet.

She deserved a title ' Queen of Jazz' without a doubt! 😊

@chaumari

It was between her and Sarah Vaughn💐

@direfranchement

She had a better title---The First Lady of Song. She was called thr Queen of Scat, and certainly she was a singer birthed of the Swing era, but she was so versatile to call her the Queen of Jazz would give insight into only one dimension of her craft. She was bigger than that.

@mthunzimhlongo660

ACTUALLY THE GODDESS OF JAZZ

I just love how the Duke clearly is in awe of her, with his little glances and smiles at her while she’s singing and his hug afterwards. Ella seems like such a lovely person, as well as such an incredible singer!

After you mentioned this I went back and watched this, I am always just so focused on her but yes he is 🤩

@dalilabendjedou2061

I’m French and listening the song in my school Sorry my English is....😂 so I’m 12 year

@KiraSlith

I would be too, the pipes on her were incredible, dare I say a revolutionary marvel for the era. The only other places you saw anything comparable was the competitive era of rap (late 90s to the end of the 00s) and Scatman, and none of them could both fill a room with their voice and singing like that at the same time.
