You Know Something
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I belong to you and I know I show it
You belong to me, baby; you'd better know it
Give me all your love, sugar, spice, and sweet honey
Don't you ever quit

Not for love or money
I'd do most anything just to amuse you
But there's nothing that I wouldn't do
Thought that I would never lose you
When I play the game, I can't afford to blow it
'Cause I play for keeps; you'd better know it

Yes, I'd do most anything just to amuse you
But there's nothing that I wouldn't do
If I ever thought I'd lose you

When I play the game, I can't afford to blow it
'Cause I play for keeps; you better know it

Overall Meaning

The song "You Better Know It" by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra is a love song that speaks of the intensity of the love the singer has for his partner. In the song, the singer assures his partner of their loyalty to each other, and emphasizes that there isn't anything they wouldn't do to keep the relationship intact. The first stanza shows that both the singer and the partner belong to each other, and their love is not one-sided. The second stanza introduces the idea that the singer would do anything just to satisfy the partner, and he would go to great lengths to keep the relationship intact. The last line emphasizes the stakes involved in the relationship.

The song exhibits Duke Ellington's signature swing style, with a fast tempo and a prominent horn section. The use of call-and-response between the lead singer and the orchestra is a trademark of Duke Ellington's style. Ellington was known for his ability to infuse jazz music with deep emotions and elevate it beyond the realm of just dance music. The chord progressions in this song elevate and complement the emotional intensity of the lyrics.

Duke - Don't You Know I Care (Or Don't You Care to Know)

@lorismonthoux1761

Nice voice, all right, but I definitely think that the crooner was not necessary.

I tend to agree - mainly because he keeps missing the half step in the first bar. (Hodges plays it...) It's an extraordinary composition, especially the bridge.
