Vampires
Dukes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I heard you never go to sleep

The nights are probably long

The streets are teeming with the dead

And we rarely get alone
And if your walking home tonight

Take another road home

Cause you could take a chance on me

That a gang does it wrong

Come on all you vampires

With your blood sucking ways

Come on and turn me out

Ooooo

When the lights go out

How you gonna find your way

And I've been talking in my sleep

And what I said I got it wrong

And every word that I will sing

Is someone elses song

I'm moving out, I'm moving soon

I'm gonna cast my doubt down there

I left my wadded on the shelf

Just to show you I don't care

Come on all you vampires

With your blood sucking ways

Come on and turn me out

Ooooo

When the lights go out

How you gonna find your way

Come on all you vampires

With your blood sucking ways

Come on and turn me out

Ooooo

When the lights go out

How you gonna find your way

Well maybe we were doomed from the beginning

And I guess I should have warned you lady

Don't go to your end

Cause I've been hearing lately

The stars are out of line

That I'm bleeding

I really shouldn't want you

That I will be your end

Come on all you vampires

With your blood sucking ways

Come on and turn me out

Ooooo

When the lights go out

How you gonna find your way

Come on all you vampires

With your blood sucking ways

Come on and turn me out

Ooooo

When the lights go out

How you gonna find your way

How you gonna find your way

Will you ever find your way

Come on all you vampires

With your blood sucking ways

Come on and turn me out

Ooooo

When the lights go out

How you gonna find your way

Come on all you vampires

With your blood sucking ways

Come on and turn me out

Ooooo

When the lights go out

How you gonna find your way

Overall Meaning

The song "Vampires" by Dukes is a haunting and dark exploration of the world of vampires. The song opens with the singer suggesting that vampires never sleep and that the streets are full of the dead. The sense of isolation and fear is palpable as the singer sings about their desire for connection.

Despite the fear, the singer invites the vampires to come and "turn me out." This could be interpreted in a few ways - it could be an invitation to be turned into a vampire, or it could be a sexual invitation. The ambiguity of the lyrics adds to the mysterious and eerie atmosphere of the song.

The chorus is particularly powerful, with the repeated refrain of "When the lights go out, how you gonna find your way?" This could be interpreted as a warning to the vampires that their way of life is unsustainable or a warning to the singer that their desire for connection with these vampires will lead to their downfall.

The final verse of the song is particularly powerful, as the singer suggests that the stars are out of alignment and that their desire for the vampires will lead to their demise. The repeated chorus at the end of the song feels particularly desperate, as the singer questions whether anyone, vampire or human, can truly find their way in this dark and foreboding world.

This is such an unusually awesome song, I made the assumption it was an Australian band. Its not the kind of song that often comes out of NZ at all, its brilliant. So you can understand I was suitably impressed when I read they were from Christchurch! Another notch in the "awesome belt" that is NZ
