1) The German rave band Dune. The band was founded in 1995 by Oliver Froning and Jens Oettrich, who are both big fans of the novels by Frank Herbert - hence the name Dune. Their first single "Hardcore Vibes" featured the voice of Oliver's then 11-year-old cousin Janine. Their second single "Are you ready to fly?" sounded quite different and already featured the typical Dune-style with high-pitched vocals and a catchy melody.
At the end of 1996 the band released the album "Forever" with a lot of tracks in a classical style - all tracks where performed together with the London Session Orchestra (see Dune & the London Session Orchestra). Lead singer Verena von Strenge left Dune after the release of "Forever" to start a solo career. Dune came back in April 1998 with a new lead singer (Vanessa Hörster). The single "Keep the Secret" was only a medium success and its successor "Electric Heaven" flopped completely.
In late 1999 Verena von Strenge came back as lead singer after her solo career was not as successful as she wanted it to be. The single "Dark Side of the Moon" was released and the album "Reunion" was produced and ready for release in May 2000. However the album was never released due to a court order that stopped the single "Heaven".
The latest single released was "Rainbow To The Stars 2003", a rework of their 1996 classic. It was released on 23 June 2003.
2) A Finnish demoscene tracker musician who adopted the more unique name Brothomstates in the latter half of the 1990s and was later signed to Warp Records.
3) Dune was also an Alias used by Drum & Bass Dj/Artist Ray Keith in the early 1990s.

John Wayne Vs Mary Chain
Dune Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wanted on your own earth
Wanted in your own land
But if you kill John Wayne I'll kill Mary Chain
Wanted in your own town
Ahha ahha
Wanted in your own clothes
But if you kill John Wayne I'll kill Mary Chain
Wanted in your own skin
So come on!
Ahha ahha ahha
Wasted by your own son
Wasted in the break of down
But if you kill John Wayne I'll kill Mary Chain
Wanted in your own skin
So come on!
Ahha ahha ahha ahha
He's the man
He's splitting our land
With this plan
To bring freedom back to every man
And I want to see that road
With the highway battery
But where is this plan?
It's blowing away with an American tank
So don't step into the clan
And I want to see that road
With the highway battery
The lyrics of DĂșnĂš's "John Wayne Vs Mary Chain" seem to touch on themes of individual identity, rebellion, and the struggle for freedom and autonomy. The repeated "Ahha ahha" in the chorus creates a sense of urgency and defiance, perhaps symbolizing a call to action or a rallying cry for those who feel oppressed or restricted in their own environments.
The mention of being "wanted on your own earth, wanted in your own land" suggests a feeling of not truly belonging or being accepted in one's own surroundings. The lines "Wanted in your own town, Wanted in your own house" further emphasize this sentiment of being out of place or seeking validation within oneself. The decision between killing John Wayne or Mary Chain could represent a personal choice between conformity and rebellion, with the singer asserting their willingness to defend their own identity and autonomy.
The references to being "wasted by your own son" and "wasted in the break of down" hint at inner turmoil and emotional conflict, possibly stemming from familial or societal pressures. The repeated offer to kill Mary Chain if John Wayne is killed reflects a cycle of retaliation or defense, illustrating a willingness to protect oneself from external threats or forces that seek to control or oppress.
The lyrics also seem to critique an oppressive system or authority figure represented by John Wayne, who is "splitting our land" and obstructing the path to freedom and self-determination. The desire to see "that road with the highway battery" suggests a longing for progress, empowerment, and a clear path forward, but the mention of an "American tank" blowing away the plan serves as a reminder of the obstacles and challenges faced in the pursuit of liberation. The song ultimately conveys a sense of defiance, resilience, and a call to resist conformity and reclaim one's individuality and agency.
