1) The German rave band Dune. The band was founded in 1995 by Oliver Froning and Jens Oettrich, who are both big fans of the novels by Frank Herbert - hence the name Dune. Their first single "Hardcore Vibes" featured the voice of Oliver's then 11-year-old cousin Janine. Their second single "Are you ready to fly?" sounded quite different and already featured the typical Dune-style with high-pitched vocals and a catchy melody.

At the end of 1996 the band released the album "Forever" with a lot of tracks in a classical style - all tracks where performed together with the London Session Orchestra (see Dune & the London Session Orchestra). Lead singer Verena von Strenge left Dune after the release of "Forever" to start a solo career. Dune came back in April 1998 with a new lead singer (Vanessa Hörster). The single "Keep the Secret" was only a medium success and its successor "Electric Heaven" flopped completely.

In late 1999 Verena von Strenge came back as lead singer after her solo career was not as successful as she wanted it to be. The single "Dark Side of the Moon" was released and the album "Reunion" was produced and ready for release in May 2000. However the album was never released due to a court order that stopped the single "Heaven".

The latest single released was "Rainbow To The Stars 2003", a rework of their 1996 classic. It was released on 23 June 2003.

2) A Finnish demoscene tracker musician who adopted the more unique name Brothomstates in the latter half of the 1990s and was later signed to Warp Records.

3) Dune was also an Alias used by Drum & Bass Dj/Artist Ray Keith in the early 1990s.

Yes, Alia, Ghanima and Leto2 were all Haderach. Alia had access to male ancestry memories since she got possessed by Harkonnen. Leto 2 is the one who decides to fulfill the prophecy though.

I don't know, I would only call Paul the kwisatz haderach and maybe Leto after he became the worm. Unlike abominations, the kwisatz haderach had no vulnerability to ancestral possession. The bene gesserit already knew abominations could access both sides of ancestral memory. The kwisatz haderach was created to solve that problem. Paul had better prescient vision, at least until Leto becomes the worm. You could probably make the argument that Ghanima was one as well since she was able to gate off her ancestral presences. You couldn't say Alia was, though. She was the textbook abomination problem the kwisatz haderach aimed to solve.

I'm still confused about possession. Out of all the memories in a person's cells how can one individual set of memories become so significant that it could take over all the others and manifest in a living host? What is the driving force behind those memories pushing them to consciousness? It's hard not to think of memories as having died with the one who made them but this sounds as if they have a life of their own.

Just splendid. Fantastic video. Personally, I am most intrigued by the trauma a Bene Gesserit experinces when her memories are unlocked. One mistake here. Ghanima did have a strong ancestral memory affect her. That was the memory of Chani, her mother. Chani protected her from possession and silenced the other voices.

Also, she was telepathically linked with Leto. Leto had blocked off a part of her mind prior to the attack of the Lazu tigers. Ghanima believed Leto had been killed by the tigers. That memory was not removed until Leto returned to Arakeen after his Trial and seized the throne from his aunt, Alia.

The problem with the concept of genetic memory is that the the genome doesn't have that much information as there are only three billion base pairs comprised of only four types of bases. Also from from an evolutionary standpoint, having ancestor memories that are blocked to most people makes no sense.

I find Leto II's possession by this "ultimate ancestor" fascinating. It seems to me that Herbert was inspired by the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, and one in particular, Ramses II (Ramses The Great), also known as... the "great ancestor" by his people and lineage. Ramses lived to an outstanding age for the time (95 by some accounts), and would have been the only ruler that generations and generations of his subjects ever knew. He restored Egypt's wealth and some historians believe that his long reign was the last golden age of Ancient Egypt. It was mostly a peaceful reign, and Ramses embodied the government so much, that some scholars believe it led to an unavoidable chaos after such a "god king" died. Ramses outlived most of his sons, and the one who inherited the throne was already close to 70 when he ascended to Pharaoh.

one of the things that confirms Herbert as so spectacular an author (and my personal favorite) is the sheer amount of, ah, "inspiration" that other writing takes from him; everybody quotes Warhammer 40k, which is obvious, but genetic memory is the conceptual core of the entire Assassin's Creed series

1) he could not have all memory of any ancestor, if genes are taken physically. because not all gene spectrum of any ancestor is present, in fact none of ancestors is complete set.
2) and yes, as said, only memories up to conception should be available.

one can circumvent the point one by saying gonosomes x and y are the memorybanks that preserve lifes of the people they were present in, but its fragile because then all females would be able to access male memories too, males have x too.

Genetic Memory doesn't exist or not as described in the Dune Universe but I think the first episode of the original outer limits (The galaxy Being)may have an interesting idea as to how human minds might survive even when the body dies. This may be how the long dead of Dune still exist though not in the way The Bene Gesserit believe while the spice elevates the mind to a point where it can tap into those old lives but not through genetic memory.

The bene gesserit CHOOSE not to look at the paternal side because the dominant presences there terrify them. Alia being preborn had no developed consciousness to be able to make this choice. Alia's own personality was formed from the pool of those memories, always connected and unable to shut off that connection. It had nothing to do with her genetic relation to the kwisatz haderach this was a known problem when pregnant bene gesserits undergo the spice change

This is one of the biggest factors that makes Dune fantasy, rather than science fiction. There is a logical flaw in the whole idea of genetic memory (even by 1960's scientific terms). Specifically, no individual (except for a ghola) should posses any memories from their ancestors after those ancestors conceived them! The genetic connection between parent and progeny is effectively severed at conception. There is no subsequent exchange of genetics. Thus, for example, Alia should have been haunted by a younger Baron Harkonnen with his memories ending at the moment he fathered Jessica.

Of course, today, we know that genetic memory is not a real thing, although the idea had some supporters in the mid-20th Century. But taken to the level with which it is applied in Dune it is effectively metaphysical. The implication of souls enters the discussion because, as noted above, if the memory transfer were biological then it would not include memories after the ancestor conceived the progeny in the bloodline.

@İsm Ata Very much correct. Herbert seemed to be applying a philosophical idea of every person being the sum of their ancestors. But genetically each generation reduces the number of genes shared by a specific ancestor and an individual. Nobody carries all the genes of all their ancestors! So the idea that complete copies of all a person's ancestors' memories, especially ones from thousands of years in the past, could be passed on genetically is patently fantasy, not science fiction.

yes, genetic memory going back that far and having all memories is unfounded at best.
(some ideas i had, a genetecist can correct me if i am wrong😊😶, thanks)
1) as you said, memories should end at conception.
2) if memories are stored troughout the genome, then one should have half of their mothers, and half of their fathers memories. going back, some random percantage from grandmothers, and the corresponding percantage from grandfathers, all the way. so a dribbling and disappearing amounts of random memories is what one should get. if one is kwizas haderach that is. reverend mothers would get a quicker disappearing memories. maybe if mitochondrial dna has some, they could get those tiny amount all the way back, maybe.
3) if memories have a certain chromosome they reside, then depending on if its a body chromosome, or gender chromosome, different kinds of transfer would occur, example only half memories would come first then skip generations, some ancestors again would not be included.
4) if mitochondrial dna has all the memories, then no matter which gender you are, you would get only female line, because you have only your mothers mitochondria, aside from rare occurances. here no kwizad haderach is possible.
5) no mutation should occur. since a mutation would change chemistry of the code, no matter if its readable or not, it should change the memories or effect them in some way. and mutations occur much more than expected.

It's really cool that Herbert in a way anticipated a way that people map ancestry nowadays. Women can only get ancestral information from their maternal haplogroup, while men can get from both mother and father because of the y chromossome. This information was not available when Herbert wrote the Dune books!
