The band is fronted by singer/composer Gustav Ejstes, who writes all music and plays the majority of instruments on the band's records. Despite this, Dungen plays live as a four-piece. Gustav, who in his teens started his songwriting with hip hop, is backed live by Swedish progressive rock veteran Reine Fiske (Landberk, Morte Macabre, Paatos, The Guild) on guitar, bassist Mattias Gustavsson (Life On Earth!), and drummer Fredrik Björling (The Guild)-- all of whom have played parts on Dungen's studio albums.
Following two vinyl album releases on Swedish record label Subliminal Sounds, Dungen briefly signed to Dolores Recordings (a subset of Virgin Records) in 2002, on which they released the CD Stadsvandringar and three singles, including one for Djungelboken 2 (the Swedish version of The Jungle Book 2). Gustav soon returned to his friend's independent record label Subliminal Sounds, stating that a major label did not feel right because Dungen is not a pop act.
Although Dungen's songs are sung entirely in Swedish, 2004's Ta Det Lugnt received great acclaim within indie rock circles and established the band's international reputation. This resulted in the band headlining two US tours and landing distribution deals in the US and UK. Dungen also performed their song "Panda" on the popular NBC television talk show Late Night With Conan O'Brien. In 2006, Dungen played at the famous Bonnaroo music festival and has also toured with Wolfmother and the Tucker B's around Australia.
Dungen released their third studio album, Tio Bitar on April 25, 2007 but did not tour in support of it.
The group's next long-player, entitled 4 was released on the 30th of september 2008.
In 2010 Dungen released their fifth studio album, Skit i allt.

The lyrics to Dungen's "Fest" reflect a sense of rebellion against societal norms and expectations. The singer presents themselves as an outsider who doesn't conform to the expectations of those in power. They acknowledge that others believe money provides freedom, but questions where that freedom goes when it's needed. The chorus describes the joy of partying and music-making, despite the disapproval of neighbors who prefer something more subdued. The final verse presents an idyllic image of a colorful field, and the singer suggests that maybe their unconventional behavior will lead to something positive, even if it doesn’t fit with what society deems normal. ("If you ask me if it's normal?") suggests that the singer understands that their behavior is seen as unusual, yet they continue to embrace it.
Overall, the song encourages individuality and questioning societal expectations, and celebrates the joy of being true to oneself even when others don't understand or approve.

Here I am, uncomfortable for those who decide how one should live
How to live in a way that suits oneself
Do you believe me then, they said that money gave me freedom
But where will you have them tomorrow when I ask
When there's a party, we stomp our feet, then our neighbors complain
på popmusik och folkton
about pop music and folk tunes
So we do, when the week has been long we head to nature
med trummor och bas så det lyfter
with drums and bass that lifts us up
Frågar du mig om det är normalt?
If you ask me if it's normal?
Then look at yourself as if you were me
But if it doesn't match what you've heard
så låt en fridlös blomma växa kvar
let a free-spirited flower keep growing
The sun sets, on the ground lies a field of secret colors
gå förbi dig och det luktar sommar
walking by it and it smells like summer
Here's our team, perhaps it takes [house through the crack smoke comes]
sätter fart som speed i mina tankar
and sets off like speed in my mind
Frågar du mig om det är normalt?
If you ask me if it's normal?
Then look at yourself as if you were me
But if it doesn't match what you've heard
Så låt en fridlös blomma växa kvar
let a free-spirited flower keep growing
