Sanctuary
Dusk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In you and I
There's a new land
Angels in flight
(I need more affection than you know)
My sanctuary
My sanctuary, yeah
All fears and lies
Melt away
Music will tie
(I need more affection than you know)
What's left of me
What's left of me, now

I watch you
Fast asleep
All I hear
Means nothing

In you and I
There's a new land
Angels in flight
(I need more affection than you know)
My sanctuary
My sanctuary, yeah
All fears and lies
Melt away
Music will tie
(I need more affection than you know)
What's left of me
What's left of me

So many ups and downs
My heart's a battleground
I need true emotion
I need more affection than you know
I need true emotion

You show me
How to see
That nothing is whole and
Nothing is broken

In you and I
There's a new land
Angels in flight
(I need more affection than you know)
My sanctuary
My sanctuary, yeah
All fears and lies
Melt away
Music will tie
(I need more affection than you know)
What's left of me
What's left of me, now

My fears
My lies

Melt away
Melt away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dusk's song Sanctuary convey a sense of finding a safe place, a sanctuary, within a relationship. The singer, addressing their lover, talks about the new world that exists when they are together. The use of the metaphor of "angels in flight" suggests a heightened sense of freedom and purity. The singer also reveals their vulnerability by admitting they need more affection than their partner knows. The repetition of the phrase "my sanctuary" reinforces the idea of a refuge from the ups and downs of life.

As the song progresses, the singer talks about the power of music to soothe and heal, and how it can tie together what's left of them. The line "all fears and lies melt away" suggests that being in this sanctuary allows the singer to confront and overcome their own fears and insecurities. The reference to the heart as a battleground further emphasizes the struggles the singer has faced in finding true emotion and affection.

The final lines of the song, "my fears, my lies, melt away," suggests a letting go of past hurts and mistakes, and a sense of being healed and made whole in this sanctuary. Overall, the lyrics of Sanctuary are a powerful expression of the transformative power of love and the way it can provide a safe haven in an uncertain world.

Think it like this:

Each song describes romance in different stages in life

Simple and Clean gives more of a childish "first love" vibe, in which romance is confusing and you hope that getting older will help you understand it better, tho', you still want to be with that person

Sanctuary seems to then be more like a teen love, or at least young adult, the transition from a superficial "I like you" to...well... "I need true emotion", also interesting how "I need more affection than you know" is backwards, probably a reference to how understanding each others feelings can be difficult sometimes, or that expressing those feelings is the difficult part...hell, maybe both

Then Don't Think Twice and Face My Fears both seems to deal with the same idea of letting all those previous apreensions fade away, the japanese version seems to be alude a way more to marriage in the lyrics, so maybe that's kinda of the closing of the story being told

If you have already found/listened to the original Sanctuary song, then please disregard this comment, for I may have misread your message.

Here's the links to the original song variants:

(Same singer, which is rare)

Also, love Dusk's cover too. It's got a near-identical energy to the original song!

We're blown away by all the love we've received for our version of "Sanctuary", and your support inspired us to tackle another Kingdom Hearts cover. "Face My Fears (feat. Tiaday)" is out now! Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWVRCl7rNCo

@The3dude

If you play sanctuary backwards it says "I need more affection than you know", and they included it as lyrics in this cover!

@culleningram7246

That’s because in Japan they read from right to left . That was intended .

@twiphe4375

@@culleningram7246 No that's just because in the original Utada says it reversed ("wonk uoy naht noitceffa erom deen I"). It doesn't have anything to do with reading styles.

@sjtiernan5841

I had to go to the original... HOW HAVE I LISTENED TO THIS SONG FOR YEARS AND NEVER KNOWN!?

@miguins4s

@@sjtiernan5841 me too!

@Awakening_Sunshine

@@culleningram7246 that's only half true. Japanese is only read from right to left when the characters are in columns. When they're in lines, they're read from left to right

There are 3 things I know for sure in life.
1. The house always wins.
2. Carbs taste good.
3. That lead guitarist needs more affection than I know.
