I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten
Dusty Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It isn't the way that you look
And it isn't the way that you talk
It isn't the things that you say or do
Make me want you so

It is nothing to do with the wine
Or the music that's flooding my mind
But never before have I been so sure
You're the someone I dreamed I would find

It's the way you make me feel
The moment I am close to you
It's a feeling so unreal
Somehow I can't believe it's true
The pounding I feel in my heart
The hoping that we'll never part
I can't believe this is really happening to me

I close my eyes and count to ten
And when I open them you're still here
I close my eyes and count again
I can't believe it but you're still here

We were strangers a moment ago
With a few dreams but nothing to show
The world was a place with a frown on its face
And tomorrow was just, I don't know

But the way you make me feel
The moment I am close to you
Makes today seem so unreal
Somehow I can't believe it's true
Tomorrow, will you still be here?
Tomorrow will come but I fear
That what is happening to me is only a dream

I close my eyes and count to ten
And when I open them you're still here
I close my eyes and count again
I can't believe it but you're still here

I close my eyes and count to ten
And when I open them, you're still here

Overall Meaning

In "I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten," Dusty Springfield sings about the overwhelming feeling of falling in love. She describes how it isn't just the person's appearance or actions that make her want them, but something intangible that she can't quite put her finger on. She imagines that this feeling is too good to be true and worries that it might all be a dream. However, whenever she opens her eyes and counts to ten, the person she loves is still there, reassuring her that it's real.

Throughout the song, Springfield explores the contrast between before and after she met the object of her affection. Before, the world seemed bleak and hopeless, but now everything is brighter and she can't imagine her life without this person. The repeating line, "I close my eyes and count to ten / And when I open them, you're still here," emphasizes her disbelief that this amazing experience is really happening to her.

The lyrics of "I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten" express both the euphoria and uncertainty of falling in love. Springfield's soulful delivery captures the intensity of these emotions and makes the song a classic.

@Richard Harries This song is written about my mother, Clive and her dated, shared their 21st and were engaged. She passed in 2019, while i knew of their relationship, i only knew of the song less than 24 hours before she died. His sister Marilyn, lovely lady, remained friends and visited my mother the day before she died.
