Over the Rainbow
E.Y. "Yip" Harburg/Harold Arlen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Overall Meaning

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a song of hope and optimism, urging listeners to dream big and believe in the impossible. The song paints a picture of a magical place beyond the horizon, where the skies are blue and dreams can come true. The opening lines suggest that this place is only a rumor or a dream, but the second verse provides a plan for reaching it - by wishing on a star and leaving all troubles behind. The song reminds us that even the smallest creatures, like blue birds, are able to fly over the rainbow, and encourages us to aspire to do the same.

The lyrics of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" have been interpreted in many ways over the years, from a message of hope in times of war to a symbol of the LGBT community's fight for equality. But at their core, the words reveal a deep human longing for something better, something beyond what we can see and touch. The song encourages us to believe in the power of our dreams and to never give up on the possibility of a brighter future.

Peace and love to all of y'all listening to this lovely song.

Yes, we would think it counts as jazz, but it falls in that show-tune area as well, especially with the Judy Garland version.

i just happened to watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow again and let the credits run when this song came on. I've always loved it and my fav version is Patti Labelle's beautiful and powerful rendition. Of course I love Judy Garlands but this lady's voice is so beautiful and elegant it grabbed my attention and I started looking at the credits to see who sang it. finally at the end it listed E.Y Harburg but not the singer. I wanted to hear it again and I had to know who belonged to that beautiful voice! so i googled it and here I am!! so glad i found it! I've listened to it twice more and shared it on my fb page. i can't wait to listen to the other recordings you've posted.

Lisette & Tyler
