Hello Cruel World
E Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello cruel world, so this is you
A broken heart, but with a view
I'm looking out to face another day
The angry mob, the happy mass

This birthday cake may be the last
I'm looking out to find another way
Norman Rockwell colors fade
All my favorite things have changed

Well, what the hell
Hello cruel world
I thought I heard an opera star
Who had no home under the stars

She sang and sang and sang the night away
And Mother Nature changed her name
She doesn't want to play the game
I don't believe she'll ever be the same

So Big Brother never came
Howdy Doody gets the blame
Well, what the hell
Hello cruel world

Bad and beautiful and strange
Monkeys dancing in a cage
Well, what the hell
Hello cruel world

Venus DeMilo grew an arm
And Old MacDonald bought the farm
Say goodbye
Hello cruel world

Norman Rockwell colors fade
All my favorite things have changed
Well, what the hell
Hello cruel world

Bad and beautiful and strange
Monkeys dancing in a cage
Well, what the hell
Hello cruel world

Say goodbye
Hello cruel world
Well, what the hell
Hello cruel world

Hello, hello...
Hello cruel world

Overall Meaning

In "Hello Cruel World," E starts by addressing the world itself, saying hello to it. He describes the world as cruel and broken, but still presents a view to it. He then goes on to talk about facing another day while being surrounded by people, both angry and happy. He mentions that the birthday cake he is eating could be his last, which hints at the uncertainty and fragility of life. E then observes that the things he once loved are disappearing and fading into the background.

The song goes on to mention an opera singer who has no place to call home and sings nonstop, with Mother Nature also undergoing a transformation and being uninterested in playing the usual game. E expresses his disbelief that things will ever be the same again. The Big Brother of George Orwell's 1984 novel never came, but Howdy Doody (a TV show character) takes the blame instead. E then reflects on how the world has become "bad and beautiful and strange" with "monkeys dancing in a cage." The song ends with E saying goodbye to the now changed world as he greets it.

Overall, "Hello Cruel World" depicts a lost, uncertain world, where everything familiar has been replaced with things that are bad and beautiful, but also strange.

Just reading his autobiography, and it brought me here. Always been a fan of eels but never heard E's early work.

Hearing this as "Tailgate's theme song" made me thing about him as character so much. I found this kind of surprising for him, which is adorable and depressing 😳
