Trouble In My Way
E Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yea, I'm stuck in my ways
It's probably temporary, probably just a phase
If it's necessary then I'll probably change
I don't believe the hype, I know they all the same
Oh, you don't fuck with me, but still stalking my page?
To me that's very strange
I checked out long ago, I should've never stayed
Yea, I'm stuck in my ways

I'm the rookie and the vet
I can't settle down, that's settling for less
She want a ring, I'm only married to my dreams
Thought she was slick, she tried to pop up in my dreams
Real ass only, cellulite is what I like
Hit it from the back, I like to see them tiger stripes
You went seven days you didn't drip, I guess ya fashion weak
If I fly to London, imma be at Fashion Week
Rolls Royce on my mind, I do believe in ghosts
The ones that do least, they be the ones that do the most
My ears to the streets, I heard all of the commotion
I been in motion, I can't be in my emotions

Yea, I'm stuck in my ways
It's probably temporary, probably just a phase
If it's necessary then I'll probably change
I don't believe the hype, I know they all the same
Oh, you don't fuck with me, then why you on my page?
To me that's very strange
I checked out long ago, I should've never stayed
Yea, I'm stuck in my ways

Fuck boy out my face
Thank you God I'm eating now, I gotta say grace
Good ones go early, no way I'll be dying young
Call me Tom Brady, imma keep a firearm
Niggas follow you so they can hate on you
Looked at my watch, I aint got time to play with you
In love with chains and whips, it's still fuck slavery
Don't look now, but I'm the one they came to see
Tell me how does it feel
That you can't get this nowhere else, I'm so surreal
Yea, can't stay in one place
Gotta escape, therefore I travel state to state

Yea, I'm stuck in my ways
It's probably temporary, probably just a phase
If it's necessary then I'll probably change
I don't believe the hype, I know they all the same
Oh, you don't fuck with me, but still stalking my page?
To me that's very strange

I checked out long ago, I should've never stayed
Yea, I'm stuck in my ways

Overall Meaning

In "Trouble In My Way," E portrays a sense of being stuck in his ways and not willing to conform to societal expectations or trends. He sees this state as temporary, likely just a phase, but emphasizes that if change is necessary, he will adapt. He expresses a skepticism towards the hype and the people who conform to it, knowing that they are all the same. E finds it peculiar that someone who claims not to like him is still keeping tabs on his social media page, highlighting the hypocrisy of their actions. Having checked out mentally a long time ago, he realizes that he should never have allowed himself to stay in that situation. Despite feeling stuck, E also asserts his confidence and self-assuredness in being both a rookie and a veteran, refusing to settle for less and remaining dedicated to his dreams. He reveals his preference for realness and embraces imperfections like cellulite, appreciating the natural beauty in them. E rejects superficiality, asserting his authenticity and dismissing those who try to intrude on his dreams by popping up in his subconscious. He asserts his independence and individuality by mentioning his fashion choices and his desire to attend Fashion Week. E shares his belief in the supernatural, referring to ghosts and connecting it to his mindset. He recognizes that those who appear to do the least are often the ones who do the most, which keeps him attuned to the goings-on around him. E notes that he remains in motion and cannot let his emotions dictate his actions. He affirms his commitment to his own unique path, not getting swayed by others' opinions or judgments. The chorus reiterates his tendency to be stuck in his ways while acknowledging the potential for temporary change if necessary. In the bridge, E addresses a "fuck boy" who he wants to leave him alone, expressing gratitude for the success he has achieved and emphasizing his determination to continue thriving. He references that good people often die young but declares his intention to keep going, comparing himself to Tom Brady, a football player known for his endurance. E reflects on the envy and hate that come with success, dismissing the time-wasters and focusing on his own priorities. He rejects the idea of materialistic possessions and the history of slavery, highlighting the importance of his own unique talent and appeal. E asserts that he is the one people come to see and asks his haters how it feels to know they can't find what he offers anywhere else. He concludes the song by expressing his restlessness and need to keep moving, traveling from state to state to escape the confines of one place.

So I'm a white guy. Back in 2005 I was going through a really bad time in my life. I was only 20, and I had a run in with the law, was facing jail time, and was just struggling inside and out. I was invited to a black church for the first time by a good friend of mine, and let me tell you... NOTHING compares. The energy and POWER in that room. To this day, I don't even know to put it into words. I don't even think you can- it's something you just have to experience. The most friendly, welcoming, and love filled crowd I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with. Smiles, hugs, and handshakes from everyone, and to be there surrounded by the swaying and the clapping, the singing, the dancing, never have I been so moved. From the minute I walked in the door, I just felt so absolutely surrounded by the spirit inside and out. This song is one of the songs that I remember and still know all the words to, and whenever I find myself homesick for that church, I go looking for this song, and end up singing and clapping along. I hope this song brings you as much joy as it does me, and no matter what you're going through, or how hopeless it seems, how many walls seem to be closing in on you, just KNOW, you don't even need to THINK about worrying- it's already taken care of, you'll see. The absolute peace you feel down to your bones knowing the Lord is in control, and he is taking care of everything... wherever you send me, whatever you ask of me Lord, I'm yours, no question, no hesitation, and I know at any point in time I can look back on the path you've lead me down, and see not only what a beautiful journey it was, but that you never left my side.
