Desperado
EAGLES(¦ÑÆN¦X°Û¹Î) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
But I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet

Now, it seems to me some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home

And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you (let somebody love you)

You better let somebody love you
Before it's too late

Overall Meaning

The song "Desperado" by EAGLES is a slowed down ballad with a strong country influence. It begins with a question aimed at a troubled cowboy named Desperado, asking him to come to his senses and stop riding fences for so long. While the singer has his pain and sadness, he seems to have a hard exterior and his own reasons for the things that please him. The lyrics advise him not to draw the Queen of Diamonds because he knows that the Queen of Hearts is always his best bet. Life has given him many fine things, but he only wants the ones he can't have. He is getting older, his pain and hunger are driving him back and his longing for freedom is only people talking because he feels like he's walking through this world all alone.

A sense of melancholy and loneliness seeps through the lines of "Desperado." Despite flashes of hope, it's a song about a man who has been living on the brink for too long. It's a song about love and loss, desperation and the fear of being alone. The lyrics are relatable and poignant, with Don Henley's emotive vocal delivery perfectly capturing the pain of the singer.
