@emptyhand777 Only a handful of the stores seen here were in the real life mall in suburban Chicago that they filmed this scene at. The mall did truly have JCPenney and a Jewel grocery store but the Pier 1 Imports and Toys R Us were added for the movie as sheer product placement.

Fun fact: the mall in this scene was actually going to be torn down not long after they shot this scene, so the directors got to actually drive the car through the mall, and at a reduced price. In fact, in the grocery part at the end, the reason the shelves are shown the way they are is because the shelves behind it are all empty. Dunno, just thought that was interesting

That mall stood many years, yet it was mostly vacant even when they filmed this sequence back in 1980. The Toys R Us was moved from its anchor location, and most stores, like the Pier 1, and the Oldsmobile dealership, were just facades. Still the best car chase scene ever! It was abandoned for the most part. While some of it was used for a school, Dixie Square Mall was abandoned after closing in 1978 before this movie started filming. Penney's held on until Jan. 1979, while Blues Bros started filming later on in the year. What really was amazing is that this mall continued to stand and rot until 2012 before finally being torn down.

He was telling me about one of his summers, that he went to Mexico, on a mission. I've seen this movie dozens of times, and for some reason I always find it hilarious at 5:24 when the one cop car just deliberately cuts through Pier 1 Imports. Like, they're on a straightaway, both cops were lined up down the line, and the one just makes a bee-line in and out of Pier 1. Not sure why, but that cracks me up.

First time I ever saw this film I literally cried while laughing at this scene. Specifically because of the use of “Can’t Turn Me Loose” in this scene. At the time, a closeout outlet store locally was using the song in a commercial for it and it made the scene a thousand times funnier when I first saw it. Plus the implausibility of the scene itself. I still can’t believe that Universal didn’t go bankrupt because of the expenses of this film to this day.

@That 70's guy New cars are designed to have a very strong solid “cage” around the passenger compartment, but with everything outside of that designed to absorb crash energy by crumpling. An older car might be more “solid” overall (maybe), but that means the structure doesn’t absorb energy in a crash, so much more force is transmitted to the passengers, causing a much higher risk of injury/death.

The part when Elroy hands over his driver's license to the cop and immediately the songs melody turns for the worst to Sam and Daves 'Hold on I'm coming' is a sign it's about to go down. Rotflmao!
