No Surrender
E Street Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, we bursted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a three-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down

Well, we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Well, now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
Now I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yards
Well maybe we'll cut someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars

'Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in the stormy night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath
Peaceful skies in my lover's bed
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head

Once we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in a stormy night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Ohh ohh ohh
Ohh ohh ohh

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of “No Surrender” are an ode to the eternal struggle between rebellious youth and restrictive adulthood. In the first verse, the singer recalls feeling stifled in school and breaking free, declaring they learned more in the three-minute song than in a formal education. In the chorus, they evoke a vow of loyalty to the almighty rock ‘n’ roll, an unbreakable bond between blood brothers who will never retreat or surrender to the dull and the complacent.

The second verse dives even deeper into this age-old conflict, as the singer notices the once young and passionate faces around them heavy with age, weighed down by the passage of time and loss of hope. But they affirm that they’re ready to renew the fight and embrace nostalgia for the innocent times gone by. As the song reaches its conclusion, the singer dreams of a better future, one where they can escape to a peaceful place with the person they love, under wide open skies and a heady imagination.

Overall, “No Surrender” is a call to arms for those who will never stop fighting what they believe in, even as the world turns against them. It’s about the bonds that connect us through music and a shared vision of a brighter horizon, no matter how many oppressive forces may try to extinguish the flame.

This is one of Bruce’s most underrated songs, no questions. Those lyrics are pure poetry.

This one and of course both Bobby Jean and Jungleland.

Had the pleasure of seeing Bruce in Dublin last night. Absolutely love this song. The energy and the friendship between Bruce and the band is exceptional.

My biggest regret is I'm never seen Bruce live but I'm disabled and it's more difficult than you'd think to get a spot where you're not looking at someone's arse..everyone stands up....disabled spots cost a lot more....

@susanschumm8508

This is another one of Bruce’s anthems that just makes me feel good. It’s one that the louder you sing the better you feel (at least for me).❤️
