Ebb Tide
Earl Grant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

First the tide rushes in, plants a kiss on the shore
Then rolls out to sea and the sea is very still once more
So I rush to your side like the oncoming tide
With one burning thought, will your arms open wide?
At last face to face, and as we kiss through an embrace
I can tell, I can feel you are love, you are real
Really mine in the rain, in the dark, in the sun
Like the tide at its ebb I'm at peace in the web of your arms

First the tide rushes in, plants a kiss on the shore
Then rolls out to sea and the sea is very still once more
So I rush to your side like the oncoming tide
With one burning thought, will your arms open wide?
At last face to face, and as we kiss through an embrace
I can tell, I can feel you are love, you are real

Really mine in the rain, in the dark, in the sun
Like the tide at its ebb I'm at peace in the web of your arms

Overall Meaning

The song "Ebb Tide" by Earl Grant is a romantic ballad that compares the ebb and flow of the tide to the feelings of love. The singer finds comfort and peace in the arms of his lover, just as the tide finds rest in its ebb. The song is full of passion and longing, and the words paint a picture of a deep and meaningful connection between two people.

From one of my favorite albums. The rendition of Exodus on this album...is just beyond. My Foolish Heart, Evening Rain, Misty, Canadian Sunset and others round out this classic album....and all are exquisite. The beginning and end of this song with the birds singing as the tide ebbs...no words...

People don't realize how fantastically stimulating it is to listen to Earl Grant play this instrumental! If Chopin's Ravel's Bolero is a 10, Grant's Ebb Tide is 100! Listen to it some night with your love... You'll then understand what everything is all about

Earl Grant's style was a significant influence in my early organ work before I started to develop a style of my own. He had style and an indefinable grace on the keyboards. RIP, Earl.

This man was my favorite person outside the family. He was a friend of my paternal grandmother and he taught me to play the piano and organ. When he was in Vancouver, BC, he would play at Isy's supper club and attend Gran's garden parties. Love by all in the family.

Even as a kid, I remember LOVING this version of Ebb Tide, and of course, Earl Grant. I can still see my parents dancing to this, so sexy, much before what I knew sexy was. They were great swing dancers, so to see him lead her all over the floor in this song, fast and slow, was breathtaking...
