The Lick
Earl Grey Lyrics

thank you ladies and gentlemen

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Earl Grey's song The Lick are quite enigmatic and thought-provoking. The song opens with the phrase "I woke up next to my darkest fear, it whispered softly in my ear" which immediately sets the tone for what seems to be a reflection on inner turmoil and anxiety. As the song progresses, the lyrics begin to take on a more philosophical undertone, with lines like "life is but a dream within a dream, we're vessels lost at sea" speaking to the transitory and ephemeral nature of existence.

Meanwhile, the repeated refrain "the lick" seemingly refers to a musical gesture or phrase, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the cyclical and repetitive nature of life. The lyrics also contain a number of references to light and darkness, which could be interpreted as symbolizing the duality of human nature, or the struggle between good and evil that we all face.

Had this tune on The Future Funk compilation CD. Whole album was awesome and my way into things like Drum and Bass and people like Aphex Twin. Hearing it again on the 1st of Jan 2012, it still sounds as good as it did some 17 years ago when I was just a wee boy getting high with my pals! Awesome share, thank you very much!

Tune! Haven't heard this for a long time. Never heard it all by itself like this, but in its day The Lick was one of those essentials a DJ would use to construct an atmospheric set. Seem to remember playing the other side of this a lot too. Thanks asterio.
